MOUNT ST. MARY'S (0-0) vs. DELAWARE (0-1)

MOUNT UPDATE: Mount St. Mary's opens the 2017 season at home against Delaware on February 11. The Mount is coming off a 6-8 season that included a 2-4 mark in Northeast Conference play. The Mount's top returning scorer is sophomore attack Chris DiPretoro, who was second on the team in both goals (22) and points (27) last season. Bubba Johnson, a First Team All-NEC selection in the midfield last year, tallied 16 goals and nine assists for 25 points for the Mount in 2016. DiPretoro and Jack Mangan were each selected to the NEC's All-Rookie team. Mangan had 47 ground balls and a team-high 21 caused turnovers last year.
ABOUT DELAWARE: Delaware opened the 2017 season with a 14-13 home loss to Bucknell last week. Charlie Kitchen and Andrew Romagnoli each scored four goals in the game while Joe Eisele added a hat trick. Kitchen finished the contest with six points (4g, 2a) with Romagnoli adding five (4g, 1a). Goalkeeper Parker Ferrigan made 13 saves while allowing 14 goals in the game. Delaware held a 12-10 lead heading into the final quarter before the Bison rallied for the win. Delaware was outshot 54-35 in the game.
THE ALL-TIME SERIES: Mount St. Mary's defeated Delaware, 14-11, last season, but is 3-12 all-time against the Blue Hens. After dropping the first 10 games of the series, the Mount is 3-2 against Delaware over the past five seasons. The Mount is 1-4 all-time at home against Delaware, including an 11-10 loss on Feb. 24, 2015, in the last matchup at Waldron Family Stadium.
LAST YEAR'S MEETING: Mount St. Mary's University rallied for a 14-11 win at Delaware in the season opener last year. Evan Gormley scored four goals while Bubba Johnson added a hat trick to lead the Mount in the victory. Trailing 9-6 five minutes into the third quarter, the Mount outscored Delaware, 8-to-2, the rest of the way to earn the win. The Mount took the lead by scoring twice in the opening minute of the fourth quarter. Mike Moynihan scored an extra-man goal from right in front on a feed from Ryan Lamon 20 seconds into the quarter to tie the score. Lamon then ripped a shot from 10 yards out for an 11-10 lead. Gormley's fourth goal of the game came just 46 seconds later, giving the Mountaineers three goals in a span of 1:26. Johnson pushed the advantage to 13-10 when he pushed a loose ball rebound into the cage with 8:26 remaining. Delaware made it a two-goal game with 3:52 left on a Steve Delargy goal, but Tommy Lyons sealed the win when he scored into an empty net from midfield with 22 seconds left. Delargy led Delaware with three goals in the loss.
EARLY START: The February 11 start date to the 2017 season is the second-earliest start to a season in Mount history. The earliest start to a campaign was Feb. 8, 2014, when the Mount lost at Maryland, 16-3.
HOME SWEET HOME: The Mountaineers will play their first four games of the season at Waldron Family Stadium. It is the first time since 1994 that the Mount has opened the season with four consecutive home games. That year, the Mount lost all four games (Marist, Colgate, UMBC and Ohio State) en route to a 3-10 season.
TEAM CAPTAINS: Graduate students Bubba Johnson and Tommy Lyons along with seniors Kevin Verkler and Mike Pascali have been named captains for the Mount St. Mary's University men's lacrosse team for the 2017 season.
