January 15, 2018—Mount St. Mary's senior guard Junior Robinson has been named the Northeast Conference Co-Player of the Week while freshman guard Donald Carey has been named the NEC Rookie of the Week. It is the second consecutive week that the Mount has had a player named NEC Player and NEC Rookie of the Week.
Robinson wins NEC Player of the Week honors for the second consecutive week after averaging 21.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and 7.5 assists in leading the Mount to a pair of wins, stretching the team's win streak to a season-best four games. Robinson scored a game-high 23 points in the Mount's 81-75 win over Sacred Heart last Thursday. He hit 14-of-17 at the foul line in the win while scoring 10 points over the final 1:15 of the game. In Saturday's 81-80 overtime win against NEC Preseason favorite Saint Francis U, Robinson recorded his second career double-double with 20 points and 10 assists. He hit 8-of-13 from the field, and scored the go-ahead layup with 13.9 seconds left in overtime. Robinson leads the Northeast Conference in scoring at 21.9 points per game while he is second in assists at 5.4 per contest.
Robinson becomes just the second player in Mount history to have three or more NEC Player of the Week awards in the same season. Chris McGuthrie did it twice during his career, winning NEC Player of the Week four times in 1995-96 and three times during the 1994-95 season. Robinson's four career NEC Player of the Week awards are tied for the second-most all-time by a Mount player with Jeremy Goode and Landy Thompson. McGuthrie was named NEC Player of the Week on seven occasions.
Carey was named the NEC Rookie of the Week after averaging 12.5 points, 5.5 assists and 2.0 steals in the Mount's wins over Sacred Heart and Saint Francis U. Carey opened the week by matching a career-high with 14 points while recording three steals in the Mount's win over Sacred Heart. He followed with 11 points and eight assists in the overtime win against Sanit Francis U, hitting 3-of-4 from three-point range in the game. Carey shot 60.0 percent from the field and 62.5 percent from three-point range on the week.
Carey joins Jonah Antonio as Mountaineers who have won NEC Rookie of the Week honors this season. It is the first time the Mount has had two different players win NEC Rookie of the Week since Jeremy Goode and Kelly Beidler did during the 2006-07 season. In addition, Carey and Antonio are the Mount's first NEC Rookie of the Week winners since BK Ashe won in 2013-14.
Mount St. Mary's is back on the road this week with games at St. Francis Brooklyn on Thursday and Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday.
