Staten Island, N.Y. (December 29, 2017)—Mount St. Mary's dropped its Northeast Conference opener at Wagner, 76-57, on Friday night at the Spiro Sports Center. Junior Robinson paced the Mount with 19 points.
Trailing 48-34 early in the second half, the Mount scored six consecutive points on a Chris Wray dunk, a Donald Carey basket, and a Robinson drive. Wagner countered with the next 12 points, with six coming on a pair of Blake Francis three-pointers, to give the Seahawks their biggest lead of the game, 60-40.
The Mount (6-8, 0-1 NEC) responded with a 10-3 run to make it 63-50, but would get no closer the rest of the way.
Robinson went 6-of-20 from the field for his 19 points while adding three rebounds and three assists. Jonah Antonio added 12 points and four rebounds with Wray chipping in 11 points and five boards in the loss. Francis led Wagner (8-4, 1-0 NEC) with 18 points with JoJo Copper just missing a triple-double with 10 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds.
The Mount struggled from the field throughout the game, hitting 19-of-54 (.352) overall and 4-of-17 (.235) from three-point range. Wagner was 29-of-60 (.483) from the field and 8-of-25 (.320) from three-point range. Wagner held a 46-to-29 advantage on the boards.
Wagner jumped out to the early lead, outscoring the Mount, 12-4, in the opening five minutes. The Mount fought back with a 7-to-2 run that was capped by a Chris Wray traditional three-point play that made it 14-11 with just under 12 minutes remaining in the opening half
The Seahawks responded with the next seven points, with Francis hitting a three-pointer that stretched the advantage to 10 points. Wagner build the lead to 32-19 on a pair of Chase Freeman free throws. Robinson answered with two free throws and a jumper, and Antonio hit 1-of-2 at the line to cut the gap to 32-24. Wagner's Shack Scott closed the half by finishing an alley-oop for a 34-24 lead at the break.
The Mount hit just 6-of-24 (.250) from the field and 2-of-10 (.200) from three-point range in the opening half. Wagner shot 13-of-30 (.433) from the field and 3-of-12 (.250) from beyond the arc.
Robinson led all scorers with 11 points in the first half. Francis, Cooper and Elijah Davis each had eight points for the Seahawks.
Mount St. Mary's is back in action with a 2:00 p.m. matchup at LIU Brooklyn on New Year's Eve.
Game Notes: Wagner holds a 37-21 lead in the all-time series… The Mountaineers are 1-8 on the road against Wagner since 2011, and the Mount's last win at the Spiro Sports Center was a 77-72 victory in the NEC semifinals on March 8, 2014.
