Chris Wray's Double-Double Lifts Mount St. Mary's Past American, 59-56

Washington, D.C. (December 18, 2017)—Chris Wray posted his second career double-double to lead Mount St. Mary's to a 59-56 win at American on Monday night.  Wray, who finished with 12 points and 12 rebounds, scored six points in the closing minutes of the victory.

Trailing 50-48, the Mountaineers (5-7) went on a 9-to-2 run to grab the lead.  Greg Alexander's three-pointer from the left wing gave the Mount a 51-50 lead.  After a miss by the Eagles, Wray converted a tough flip shot on the fast break on a feed from Junior Robinson to stretch the lead to 53-50.

American's Sa'eed Nelson cut the Mount lead to 53-52 with a pair of free throws, but Wray countered with a reverse lay-up with 2:40 left to restore the three-point lead.  After a turnover, Wray slammed home a feed from Alexander to make it 57-52 with 1:53 on the clock.

Nelson converted back-to-back lay-ups to make it a one-point game, and American (3-7) fouled the Mount's Bobby Planutis with 7.9 seconds left.  Planutis calmly sank both ends of the 1-and-1 to give the Mount a 59-56 advantage.  Nelson got the inbounds pass, took the ball up the court, but his three-pointer at the buzzer came up way short, and the Mount was able to earn its first road win of the season.

The Mountaineers opened the second half with a 12-to-4 run to take a 39-32 lead.  American was able to fight back, taking a 47-46 lead on a Larry Motuzis three-pointer.  Another Motuzis triple gave American its final lead of the contest, 50-48, with 5:18 left in the second half.

Wray finished with 12 points, 12 rebounds, three steals and a pair of blocks for his second career double-double. Robinson added 13 points, five assists and three steals with Donald Carey chipping in 10 points and three assists.  Ryan Gomes added eight points and five rebounds while Jonah Antonio had six points, nine rebounds and three steals.

Nelson led American with 19 points and eight rebounds while Motuzis had 16 points and eight boards.

The Mount shot 39.7 percent overall and was just 6-of-23 (.261) from three-point range in the win.  The Mont had 10 steals off 14 American turnovers.  American shot 37.9 percent overall and was 7-of-22 (.318) from three-point range.

In the first half, the Mount took an early 8-7 lead on a Robinson bucket, but American rattled off a 10-0 run to push out to a 17-8 lead just past the midway point of the first half.  The Mountaineers countered with a 12-to-3 run of their own to cut the deficit to 21-20.  Carey had a pair of three-pointers during the run that was capped by a Planutis lay-up.

The Mount was able to even the score at 27-27 on an Antonio three-pointer from the left corner, but American's Nelson hit a free throw with 14.2 seconds left to give the Eagles a 28-27 lead at the break.

The Mount shot 46.2 percent (12-of-26) from the floor in the first half, but was just 3-of-10 (.300) from three-point range.  American shot 33.3 percent (11-of-33) in the half while holding a 23-to-15 edge on the boards.

Mount St. Mary's closes out the non-conference schedule on Friday, December 22, with a 7:00 p.m. matchup at Coppin State.
