October 9, 2019 (Emmitsburg, Md.) - Mount St. Mary's head baseball coach Scott Thomson has selected three upperclassmen to serve as captains for the upcoming 2020 campaign. The Mountaineers will be led by fifth year senior Michael Kupyers (Chalfont, Pa.), senior Jared Urban (Coatesville, Pa.) and junior Thomas Savastio (Camp Hill, Pa.).
"All three players bring great leadership, drive and dedication both on and off the field." Thomson said. "We are looking for the three of them to lead us back to the Northeast Conference Tournament. Kuypers is a 5th year senior who has been a mainstay on the pitching staff seeing time as both a starter and closer throughout his career, Urban has been one of the all-time best outfielders in program history and Tommy Savastio is coming off of two great seasons both offensively and defensively at first-base."
Kupyers will take the mound this season for his fourth and final year. Over his 45 career appearances, he has won 11 contests for the Mountaineers and pitched to a 4.24 career ERA. In his junior year, Kupyers tied for a team high three wins and finished third on the team with a 4.79 ERA over 56.1 innings pitched.
Urban's outfield prowess has shown through with his defense. In 124 games he holds a .996 fielding percentage, with one error over 280 total chances. Jared also helps with his bat, collecting 83 hits, 14 doubles, six home runs and five triples across three years.
Savastio has anchored the first base position for The Mount since his freshman year. Following a solid first year, Tommy improved in 2019, batting .285 with 31 runs scored, five homers and 27 RBI's. Over 96 games and two seasons, Savastio has earned a .273 average and a .990 fielding percentage.
The Mount kicks off its 2020 baseball campaign next February, looking to improve on a 15-35 record (8-16 NEC) from a year ago.
