Navy Overpowers Mount St. Mary's Baseball 11-7 On Wednesday Afternoon

Annapolis, Md. (March 20, 2019) - Navy overpowered the Mount St. Mary's baseball team 11-7 on Wednesday afternoon. The Mountaineers' offense was led by junior Owen Wosleger who went 1-for-3 with three runs batted in. 

Senior Alex Kriss and sophomore Myles Nicholson recorded the only multi-hit games on the day for the Mount in the loss. Kriss went 2-for-5 with two runs batted in and two doubles while Nicholson hit .500 (2-for-4) with two runs scored, and two doubles. Senior Patrick Causa and freshman Trevor Leamer drove the other two runs in for Mount St. Mary's on the day.

The Mount (6-9) grabbed an early 4-1 lead after two innings of play. The Mountaineers plated two runs in each of the first two innings while the Midshipmen (15-7) only brought one run home to score. Myles Nicholson led off the game with a double to left field and was brought home to score the first run of the game after Patrick Causa hit a RBI single through the left side in the cleanup spot. Two batters later, Causa scored off of a RBI single up the middle from Trevor Leamer. In the top of the second inning, Jared Urban hit a single through the right side and advanced to second off of Nicholson's second double of the game. Urban scored off of a RBI groundout to first base off the bat of Owen Wosleger and Nicholson was plated off of a RBI double down the left field line from Alex Kriss for Mount St. Mary's fourth run of the game.

Navy got on the board in the bottom of the second inning and then took a 5-4 lead after they brought home four runs in the bottom of the third. In the bottom half of the second, Evan Lowery hit a sacrifice to center field that brought Jacob Williamson home to cross the plate. The Midshipmen scoring in the bottom of the third inning was highlighted by a three RBI double off the bat of Ryan Duffey. 

The Mountaineers tied the ballgame up at five runs a piece after they scored one run in the top of the fourth inning. Jared Urban forced a walk to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a wild pitch during the next at bat. Urban reached third base on a groundout and was later brought home to cross the plate off of a RBI sacrifice fly by Owen Wosleger

Navy answered the Mount's run with six unanswered runs of their own that they would put on the board. The Midshipmen scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and added four more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Christian Policelli hit a two RBI home run over the left field fence for Navy's two runs in the fifth inning. In the sixth inning, Jacob Williamson hit a two RBI single to right field and Zach Stevens hit another two RBI single through the left side for the Midshipmen's four runs in the inning.

Mount St. Mary's added two more runs in the game, one run in each of the seventh and eighth innings, but fell short of Navy 11-7. In the top of the seventh inning, Alex Kriss drove Owen Wosleger in to cross the plate with his second RBI double of the game. Wosleger hit a RBI single to right field that plated Bryant Shives for the Mountaineers' lone run of the inning.

Trent Topping (1-2) recorded the win for Navy after pitching a shutout inning in relief while Andrew Dameron (0-1) picked up the loss for the Mount. With the win, the Midshipmen move to 15-7 on the year while with the loss, Mount St. Mary's drops to 6-9 to begin the 2019 season.

The Mount baseball team welcomes Fairleigh Dickinson to E.T. Straw Family Stadium for a three game series (March 22 – 24) with the first game on Friday at 3 PM.
