Somerset, N.J. (May 7, 2018) - Mount St. Mary's University freshman first baseman Thomas Savastio has been named Northeast Conference Co-Rookie of the Week by the league office on Monday afternoon.
Savastio recorded eight hits and six RBI against defending NEC champion Central Connecticut. Helping the Mount win three of four games and grab a stronghold on the fourth, and final, conference tournament berth, the rookie first baseman batted .500 (8-for-16) with one homer, one double, two walks six RBI and two runs scored. He accounted for at least one RBI in each of the team's three victories. After an 0-for-4 in a mid-week affair against Georgetown, Savastio heated up in the series opener at CCSU. He singled in the fifth frame and blasted a two-run homer in the eighth, contributing to a 17-7 triumph. He delivered the decisive blow in Game 3, connecting on a two-run, tie-breaking single in the Mount's final at-bat. Savastio also delivered a run-scoring sac fly in the third frame of the 6-3 victory. He recorded three hits in the 12-inning series finale, a 9-8 win for Mount.
In his first collegiate season, Savastio is hitting .284 with 28 RBI, 20 runs scored, 17 walks, five doubles, and four homeruns.
Savastio and the Mount travel to Florida State for the final non-conference matchup of the year on May 11-13 with the first game on Friday at 6:00 PM.
