New Britain, Ct. (May 6, 2018) - Mount St. Mary's baseball edged Central Connecticut 9-8 in extra innings on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Mountaineers took the weekend series three games to one over the Blue Devils to remain in the Northeast Conference (NEC) playoff picture. Alex Kriss, Patrick Causa, and Thomas Savastio led the Mount offense with three hits each and combined for three runs batted in and two runs scored. Michael Kuypers pitched 4.2 strong innings while he allowed no runs and struck out three to earn his third win of the year. Noah Smith came in and pitched a scoreless 12th frame and struck out one batter to record his second save on the season.
Mount St. Mary's and Central Connecticut combined for nine runs in the first two innings with th Blue Devils up 5-4 after two innings. Alex Kriss put the Mountaineers on the board first in the top of the first when he belted a solo homerun to left field. In the top of the second, Matthew Kephart hit a double to right field that plated Pat Daly and the next batter, Jared Urban doubled to left center that brought in Randall Minogue and Kephart. Dean Lockery hit a grandslam in the bottom half of the inning to put Central ahead by one run.
The Mount tied the ballgame in the top of the third inning when back to back doubles led off the inning. Vaughn Parker II hit the first double and Thomas Savastio scored Parker off of a double down the right field line. The Blue Devils took the lead in the bottom of the fifth when they added one run off the bat of Chris Kanios.
The Mountaineers took their first lead of the game after they pushed three more runs on the board in the top of the sixth inning that made it a 8-6 game. Mount St. Mary's scored the first two runs of the inning off of a throwing error and the third run came in the next at bat when Kriss singled to right center that plated Myles Nicholson. Central Connecticut evened the game again, this time at eight runs apiece when they scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh. The Blue Devils plated both of their runs off of a RBI single from Kanios and a sacrifice fly later by Chandler DeBrosse.
After a scoreless eighth and ninth frame, the game headed into extra innings. The Mount plated the go-ahead run in the top of the 12th inning to take the lead. Alex Kriss and Patrick Causa each singled to lead off the inning and both advanced to second and third when Brendan Dabagian put down a sacrifice bunt. With the bases loaded and one out, Pat Daly hit a RBI single that brought Kriss in to cross the plate.
Michael Kuypers (3-1) earned the win for the Mountaineers and Patrick Mitchell (3-1) received the loss for Central Connecticut State while Noah Smith (2) picked up the save for the Mount. Mount St. Mary's moves to 20-25 on the year with a NEC mark of 14-11 and the Blue Devils drop to 15-26 on the year with a 9-16 mark in NEC play.
The Mount stays on the road as they travel to Florida State for the final non-conference matchup of the year on May 11-13 with the first game on Friday at 6:00 PM.
