Hanover, Md. (April 4, 2018) - The Mount St. Mary's baseball team stomped Coppin State 15-5 on Wednesday afternoon. The Mount offense was led by freshman, Andrew Malone who went 3 for 6 (.500) with five runs batted in, and his first career homerun. Four other Mountaineers, Myles Nicholson, Vaughn Parker II, Thomas Savastio, and CJ Kozorosky recorded multi-hit games and combined for five more runs batted in. Freshman, Brenden Kennedy picked up his first career win while pitching five scoreless innings in relief and striking out two batters.
The Mount jumped out to an early 5-0 lead, scoring five unanswered runs to begin the ballgame. The Mountaineers plated one run in the top of the first, two runs in the top of the second, and two more runs in the top of the third. After Nicholson singled to lead off the top of the first, Patrick Causa brought him home to cross the plate with a double to right field for the first run of the game. With two outs and two runners on base in the top of the second inning, Nicholson hit his second single of the game that scored Jared Urban and Zack Costello. Malone recorded his first RBI of the day in the top of the third with two outs when he plated Parker with a single. Malone crossed the plate later in the inning after an error by the shortstop for Mount St. Mary's fifth run of the game.
Coppin State responded by plating two runs in the bottom of the third inning to cut the deficit to two runs, 5-2. Marcos Castillo hit a sacrifice fly to right field that plated Caleb Duhay for the Golden Eagles first run of the game. The next batter, Nazier McIlwain singled through the left side of the infield that brought Allen Saar in to cross the plate for Coppin State's second run.
The Mountaineers erupted for ten straight runs to secure the 15-5 win. Malone hit a three run homerun in the top of the fifth inning that brought Parker and Savastio home with him after Parker recorded his second double of the game and Savastio worked a walk. The Mount added four more runs on five hits in the top of the sixth inning. The scoring was highlighted by a RBI double from Parker, his third double of the game, and a two run homerun from Savastio, his third homerun of the season. Mount St. Mary's plated one more run in the top of the seventh inning and two more runs in the top of the ninth inning all off of singles.
The Golden Eagles put three more runs on the board in the bottom of the ninth but fell short of the comeback. Carlos Alviarez singled through the left side that plated Brandon Watkins for the first run of the inning. The next batter, Duhay doubled to center field that brought Jonathan Sabino home to cross the plate. Alviarez scored the last run of the game after Saar flied out to center field.
With the win, the Mount moves to 7-14 on the season with a 2-3 conference record and the Golden Eagles dropped to 8-16 on the year with a conference record of 7-2. Kennedy (1-0) received the win for Mount St. Mary's and Delvin McFadden (0-1) picked up the loss for Coppin State.
The Mountaineers travel to Wagner for a four game series April 6-8 with the first game on Friday, April 6 at 11:30 AM.
