The Mount St. Mary's baseball team split a doubleheader against Sacred Heart at Darien High School on Sunday to begin Northeast Conference (NEC) play. The Mount edged the Pioneers 7-6 in the first game but the Pioneers took the second game 11-5.
Strong relief pitching from Michael Kuypers and a five run top of the sixth helped Mount St. Mary's edge Sacred Heart 7-6 in the first game of the doubleheader. Freshmen, Myles Nicholson and Andrew Malone each recorded multi-hit games to help lead the Mount offense. Malone went 2 for 4 with a double and one run scored and Nicholson went 2 for 4 with two singles. Kuypers pitched 5.0 innings, gave up two runs on two hits and struck out three batters.
A six run bottom of the sixth inning propelled Sacred Heart past Mount St. Mary's 11-5 in the second game of the doubleheader. Causa, Savastio, Minogue, and Zack Costello each tabbed multiple hits in the loss and combined for four of the Mount's five runs batted in. Savastio recorded a 2 for 4 game with a double, his first homerun of the season, two runs scored, and two runs batted in. Noah Smith pitched one inning in relief while giving up no runs and only allowing one hit. With the doubleheader split, the Mount's jumps to a 4-11 record with a 1-1 mark in conference play and the Pioneers tab a 5-12 record with a 1-1 mark in conference play as well.

ABOUT THE SHORE
Freshman outfielder Avery Tunnell sent the Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team home happy with a 7-6 walk-off win over the Norfolk State Spartans Sunday. The Shore (3-20, 2-4 MEAC) had their most productive offensive showing of the year, batting .378 (14-37) on the day. Sophomore Dwayne Marshall and freshman Jordan Torres collected three hits each. Both players also drove in a run and scored. Senior Jamison Trower, sophomore Blake Coleman and Tunnell also had multi-hit outings.
ALL-TIME SERIES WITH MARYLAND-EASTERN SHORE
The Mountaineers own a 29-7 advantage in the all-time series with the Shore and won the most recent matchup coming last year. The Mount swept doubleheader action at home, winning the first game 2-1 in 11 innings and winning the second game 2-0. Mount St. Mary's is a perfect 12-0 against Maryland-Eastern Shore at home, 17-4 on the road and 0-3 in neutral site contests.
The Mount St. Mary's baseball team will head to Bryant for a three game series March 29 – 31. The first game will be on Thursday, March 29 at 3:00 PM.
