Punta Gorda, Fla. (February 27, 2018) - The Mount St. Mary's Baseball team was blanked 3-0 by St. Bonaventure in the second game of the three game series on Tuesday afternoon. Myles Nicholson, Alex Kriss, and Sean Kelly each recorded multi-hit games for the Mount in the loss. Trey McGough started the game and pitched a solid 7.0 innings while only giving up one run on five hits and struck out five batters.
The Bonnies scored one run in the top of the second inning and that was all they needed to get the win. Sam Fuller hit a RBI single that plated Jake Miknis for the first run of the game. St. Bonaventure's starter, Braydon Nelson pitched a complete game shutout and giving up eight hits while striking out seven batters.
The Mountaineers had plenty of opportunities, recording eight hits while leaving eight runners left on base. Mount St. Mary's started the bottom of the first inning with a single from Nicholson, but Nicholson got picked off during the next at bat. With two outs, Kriss singled to keep the inning alive and the next batter, Vaughn Parker worked a walk. The Mount had runners on second and first with the number five hitter coming to the plate. Randall Minogue could not capitalize however, and grounded into a fielder's choice to end the inning. This was the Mountaineers best chance to get on the scoreboard and take the early lead which could have flipped the game.
After five scoreless innings, Ryan MacCarrick plated St. Bonaventure's other two runs with a two RBI double that brought Alex Schutz and Mike Magnanti across the plate to score. Mount St. Mary's drops to 1-4 on the season and St. Bonaventure jumps to .500, 2-2. McGough (1-1) recorded the loss for the Mount while Nelson (1-0) received the win for the Bonnies.
The Mount and St. Bonaventure will play the last game of the three game series Thursday, March 1 at 12 PM.
