Punta Gorda, Fla. (February 26, 2018) - An eight run bottom of the fourth powered St. Bonaventure past Mount St. Mary's 14-9 in the first game of the three game series. Myles Nicholson, Thomas Savastio, and Sean Kelly each had multi-hit games and combined for four of the eight runs batted in by the Mountaineers. Freshman, Andrew Malone recorded his first career hit in the fourth inning. Jared Urban added a 1 for 2 day with a RBI single and a stolen base coming off the bench for the Mount.
St. Bonaventure jumped out to an early 4-0 lead after scoring two runs in the first two innings before the Mount answered with three runs of their own. Ryan MacCarrick started the scoring for the Bonnies with a RBI double to left centerfield that plated Mike Magnanti for the first run of the game. In the bottom of the second, Brandon Henshaw hit a two RBI single to left field that brought home Ben MacDonald and Alex Schutz.
The Mountaineers climbed back into the game scoring three runs in the top of the fourth inning to make it a 4-3 ball game. After Randall Minogue and Kelly reached base safely, Malone singled to left field that brought Minogue across the plate to score for the Mount's first run of the game. The next batter, Urban, plated Kelly with a single to the shortstop and advanced Malone to third with one out. Nicholson scored Malone on the next at bat with a single for Mount St. Mary's third run of the game.
St. Bonaventure responded by erupting for an eight run bottom of the fourth inning that pushed their lead to 12-3. Henshaw started the scoring with a single to right field that plated Schutz and Magnanti finished the scoring with a sacrifice fly to right field that brought home Jeff Palczewski to cap off the Bonnies eight run inning. St. Bonaventure scored all of their runs in the fourth inning with five singles, a double, and a sacrifice fly.
The Mountaineers cut the deficit to four runs after scoring a run in the top of the fifth inning and four more runs in the top of the sixth inning that made it a 12-8 game. Kelly hit a RBI double to left field that plated Minogue in the top of the fifth. In the top of the sixth, with one out, Nicholson on second and Urban on third, Vaughn Parker II reached on an error by the second baseman that brought Urban in to score. Minogue singled to right field in the next at bat that plated Nicholson for the Mount's second run of the inning. The next batter, Savastio, hit a sacrifice fly that brought Alex Kriss across the plate to score. With two outs, Kelly delivered his second RBI of the game with a single to left field that brought home Parker.
The Bonnies added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning with two straight singles before Mount St. Mary's added one more run in the top of the ninth but fell short of the comeback. Freshman, CJ Kozorosky, was plated in the top of the ninth by an error from the shortstop. The Mount falls to 1-3 on the season and St. Bonaventure advanced to 1-2.
Pat Daly (0-1) received the loss for the Mountaineers while Casey Vincent (1-0) recorded the win for the Bonnies. These two teams will play the second game of the series, Tuesday, February 27, at 1:00 PM
