Emmitsburg, Md. (March 24, 2016) – Mount St. Mary University dropped a 20-4 decision to Wagner on Thursday in Northeast Conference baseball action at E.T. Straw Family Stadium.
Wagner jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a two-run double by Phil Capra to left field with two outs. The Seahawks were held scoreless for the next three innings before Nick Mascelli and Sean Mazzio hit back-to-back solo homers to double the Wagner lead.
The Seahawks added six runs in the sixth frame and eight in the seventh to take a commanding lead. Mascelli hit a two-run homer and Anthony Harrold clubbed a grand slam to power the Wagner rally in the seventh.
The Mount tallied all four of its runs in the bottom half of the seventh on an RBI groundout by Tommy Quealy and a pair of RBI walks from Alex Kriss and Dennis Stewart as the Mountaineers cut the deficit to 18-4.
The Seahawks registered two more runs in the eighth and went on for the 20-4 victory for their first NEC win of the season. Austin Goeke picked up the win with 6.0 scoreless inning and eight strikeouts.
The top of the order did most of the damage for the Seahawks, as Mascelli, Mazzio and Capra combined for eight hits and 10 RBI, while Harrold added four RBI on his grand slam.
Alex Kriss led the Mount with a pair of hits, a walk and an RBI, and Ryan Owens, Pat Daly, Brendan Dabagian, Patrick Causa, Tanner Sampson and Josh Lenig picked up the other Moutaineer hits in the contest. Lefty Chad Diehl threw 5.1 innings, striking out three and allowing five earned on six hits. Outfielder Ryan Owens pitched the final inning of the game for his first career pitching appearance, and struck out a pair in a scoreless frame.
The Mountaineers and Seahawks play a doubleheader on Friday (March 25), with the first game set for 1 p.m. from Straw Family Stadium.
