Baltimore, Md. (September 30, 2018) - The Mount St. Mary's women's tennis team grabbed first place and fifth place at the Loyola Invitational on Sunday afternoon. The Mount duo of Alexa Quintanilla and Taylor Cook earned first place and the Mountaineer pairing of Hannah Davis and Megan Smith took home fifth place.
The invitational is a 'Points of the Compass' format, with each team consisting of two players and each round consisting of a doubles match and two singles matches. The winner of the best-of-three advances to the next round.
Quintanilla and Cook edged Loyola's Kateri Martin and Abby Thornton 2-1 in the Finals. The Mount St. Mary's duo topped the Greyhounds' duo 6-3 in the doubles match and Quintanilla topped Martin 4-6, 6-3, 10-7 in the first singles competition but Cook was downed by Thornton 6-1, 6-0 in the second singles match.
In the North bracket Final and fifth place match, the Mount pairing of Davis and Smith blanked Dhanya Asokumar and Anya Gunewardina from Johns Hopkins 3-0. Davis and Smith topped Asokumar and Gunewardina 6-4 in doubles action while Davis downed Asokumar 6-3, 6-2 and Smith clipped Gunewardina 6-2, 5-7, 11-9 in singles competition.
The third Mount pairing of Emma Blake and Mia Pittman dropped the 15th place match to Johns Hopkins Sophia Saland and Lilian Oliver 2-1. Blake and Pittman topped by Saland and Oliver 6-4 in the doubles match but lost both the singles matches in two sets each.
The Mount St. Mary's women's tennis team returns home for the Mount Invitational on October 26-28.
