Women’s Swimming & Diving Opens Season with Victory Over VMI


Lexington, Va. (October 6, 2018) – The Mount St. Mary's women's swimming & diving team opened the 2018-19 season with a 126-80 victory at VMI on Saturday afternoon. The Mountaineers won nine of 12 events at the meet.

The Mount opened the afternoon by taking the top-three spots in the 200 medley relay, led by a first-place finish from the relay squad of Maddie McGraw, Lauren Gullickson, Valeria Villagran and Maggie deTar in 1:52.01.

The Mountaineers kept things rolling by winning each of the next three events. Mary Lombardi claimed a first-place finish in the 1000 free (10:58.59), deTar won the 200 free (2:01.81), and Villagran earned the top spot in the 50 free (25.84), as the trio helped the Mount take a commanding lead.

The Mount claimed three more individual wins in swimming events during the meet as Juliet Whitman won the 100 fly (1:02.20), Maddie McGraw touched the wall first in the 100 free (54.72), and rookie Elizabeth Fahrney recorded her first collegiate victory, placing first in the 500 free (5:38.09).

Laura Kingham recorded the top score in the 1-meter diving event to collect the win with a 162.65.

In the final event of the meet, the Mount's relay team of McGraw, deTar, Lombardi and Villagran, who each claimed individual wins prior, combined to swim the 200 free relay in 1:43.21 to take first place in the event.

With the victory, the Mountaineers improved to 13-0 all-time in dual meets against VMI.

The Mount returns to action on October 21 for the NJIT Invitational.
