September 25, 2018—Mount St. Mary's senior Kayla Hughes (Hershey, Pa.) has been named the Northeast Conference Player of the Week. Hughes scored three goals in a pair of games to pace the Mountaineer offense last week.
Hughes opened the week with a two-goal performance in the Mount's 4-3 loss to UMBC. She scored in the first half on a shot from 23 yards out to even the score at 1-1. In the second half, Hughes buried a free kick in the 64th minute to tie the game at 3-3. Hughes provided the Mount's lone goal in a 1-1 draw with Fairleigh Dickinson to open NEC play on Sunday. Hughes was able to tuck a shot just inside the near post from a very tough angle in the corner to knot things up at 1-1.
The last Mountaineer to win NEC Player of the Week honors was Jenna West on August 28, 2017. For the season, Hughes leads the Mount and is fifth in the NEC with four goals.
The Mountaineers return to action on Friday, September 28, at LIU Brooklyn.
