Mount St. Mary's Women's Soccer Battles Delaware State to 1-1 Draw on Senior Day

Emmitsburg, Md. (September 16, 2018)--Mount St. Mary's battled to a 1-1 draw with visiting Delaware State on Senior Day at Waldron Family Stadium on Sunday afternoon.  Senior Jenna West provided the Mount offense with her first goal of the season.

The Mount (1-5-1) had to play nearly then entire game a player down when Gianna Pomykacz was given a red card 7:23 into the game.  Despite being a player down, the Mountaineers generated several good scoring chances early in the opening half.  West was denied by Delaware State goalkeeper Franchesska Ramirez in the 10th minute.  West had another good opportunity six minutes later, but saw her shot from about eight yards out go high.  Mount St. Mary's held a 4-to-3 edge in shots in the opening half.

Mount St. Mary's continued to apply pressure and finally broke through early in the second half.  Maddie Tchou sent a pass to Jasmine McCree, who was able to send a ball to West open at the top of the penalty area.  West collected the pass, and drilled a shot into the right side of the goal to put the Mountaineers on top, 1-0.  The Hornets (2-7-1) picked up the play late in the second half, and were rewarded with a tying goal with just 3:33 remaining in regulation.  Alyssa Coustensis sent a through pass to Jade Jamison, who was able to beat Mount goalkeeper Maggie Barron to even the score.

In the first overtime period, Barron made a pair of saves to keep the game tied.  The Mount had the best scoring chance in the second overtime period with just over a minute and a half remaining.  A high bounce fell to the feel of Kristen Isoldi, who drilled a shot toward the empty net.  Her potential game-winning strike was denied by a Delaware State defender on the endline.

The Mount held an 18-to-10 advantage in shots with West leading the way with 10 shots for the Mountaineers.  Barron made five saves while Ramirez made four saves in 64:11 of action for Delaware State.  Leslie Fazio made one save over the final 45:49 of action for the Hornets as well.

The Mount is back in action on Wednesday, September 19, with a 4:00 p.m. matchup at UMBC.
