Mount St. Mary's Women's Rugby Tabs Second Place At Pioneer Cup On Saturday

Fairfield, Connecticut (April 13, 2019) - The Mount St. Mary's women's rugby team tabbed second place at the Pioneer Cup on Saturday hosted by Sacred Heart.

The Mount earned first place in their pool after they won their first three matches of the tournament. A 29-7 win in the Semi Final match against Norwich put the Mountaineers in the Championship match against Army's Team B. In the Championship match, Army topped Mount St. Mary's 21-12 to finish out the tournament.

Freshman Ubaida Ahmed led the Mount offense with seven conversion kicks and five tries scored on the day. The Ghana native leads the team in the 7's season with 17 times she has touched the ball down a crossed the touch line. Graduate student Julie Crochet added four tries scored on the day for Mount St. Mary's. This is the third 7's tournament this year that the Mountaineers have walked away with second place.

The Mount women's rugby squad heads to Navy for the Navy 7's Tournament on Saturday, April 20.

Mount St. Mary's 7, University of New England 5

  • Ubaida Ahmed: 1 try scored, 1 conversion kick
  • New England grabbed the early 5-0 lead but Ahmed scored the last try of the match and clinched the match win with the conversion kick after.

Mount St. Mary's 19, Army West Point (Team B) 10

  • Ubaida Ahmed: 2 tries scored, 2 conversion kicks
  • Julie Crochet: 1 try scored
  • Hanna Rojas-Rhodes: 1 try scored
  • The Mountaineers jumped out to a 12-0 advantage before Army rattled off 10 unanswered points that made it a 12-10 match
  • The Mount answered with a try and a conversion kick of their own late in the match that gave them control of the match, 19-10

Mount St. Mary's 17, Molly 14

  • Ubaida Ahmed: 1 try scored, 1 conversion kick
  • Hanna Rojas-Rhodes: 1 try scored
  • Lavona Rae Aromin: 1 try scored
  • Mount St. Mary's scored all of their 17 points in the first half and held Molloy to just seven points in each of the halfs.
