The Mount Women's Rugby Team Heads To Philadelphia For The University Of Pennsylvania's 7's Tournament

NIRA TIER 2 ALL-AMERICAN HONORS
Four Mountaineers earned National Intercollegiate Rugby Association (NIRA) Tier 2 All-American Honors as announced by the league office on March 13. Jordan ButcherMaya Grassi, and Ubaida Ahmed were named as NIRA Tier 2 All-Americans for the 2018 fall season while Julie Crochet was tabbed as NIRA Tier 2 All-American Honorable Mention.

In just the second year as a division one program, Jordan ButcherMaya GrassiUbaida Ahmed, and Julie Crochet led the Mount St. Mary's women's rugby team to a 6-3 fall season record that culminated with a NIRA Tier 2 Championship win, 22-15, against Sacred Heart. In the championship match, Crochet led the Mountaineers with two tries scored while Ahmed was named Most Valuable Player.

ABOUT THE MOUNT
The Mount St. Mary's women's rugby team tabbed first place and second place at the Bloomsburg 7's Tournament on Saturday. The Selects (Mount team 2) competed in the Challenger Plate bracket where they won the Challenger Plate Championship. The Elite (Mount team 1) competed in the Cup bracket where they walked away with second place. 

The Mount team 2 downed West Chester 17-12 in the Challenger Plate Final to earn first place in that bracket while the Mount team 1 was topped 25-0 by Princeton team 1 in the Cup Final to bring home second place in the Cup bracket. Mount team 2 finished pool play in first of the Challenger Plate bracket and the Mount team 1 finished pool play in second in the Cup bracket. 

Freshman Jenna Lewaren led the Mount on the day with 10 tries scored and one conversion kick for a total of 52 points put on the board. Freshman Citlali Villegas added six tries scored for Mount team 2 on the day. For Mount team 1, graduate student Julie Crochet led the team after she touched the ball down four times on the day while freshman Maya Grassi led the team with nine conversion kicks.
