Emmitsburg, Md. (September 13, 2018) – Mount St. Mary's women's lacrosse Head Coach Lauren Schwarzmann has announced the addition of former Bryant University goalie Sammy Santeramo to her coaching staff ahead of the 2019 season.
"I am very happy that Sammy will be joining our coaching staff," said Schwarzmann. "We've been able to compete against her in the Northeast Conference for the past four years and I know how successful she was at Bryant. She is competitive, hard-working and driven. I know she will bring a tremendous work ethic and championship mindset to our players and program. I can't wait for Sammy to aid with our goalie development and defense."
Santeramo was one of the premier goalies in the Northeast Conference (NEC) throughout her four seasons at Bryant, racking up a pair of All-NEC First Team selections in 2016 and 2017, and earning All-NEC Second Team honors as a senior last season. The Wantagh, New York native rounded out her career as Bryant's all-time leader in save percentage (.483), goals against average (9.03), wins (46), games played (71) and minutes (3508:29), and ranks second in program history in career saves (494) and saves per game (6.96). Santeramo was vital to Bryant's success since stepping in as the starting goalie her freshman season, leading the Bulldogs to an impressive 25-3 record in conference play and a pair of NEC Championships in her four years.
"I'm beyond thankful and excited for the opportunity that Coach Schwarzmann and the Mount St. Mary's Athletic Department have given me," said Santeramo. "It's such an honor to join this amazing staff and program to begin my collegiate coaching career. I'm excited to bring my passion, knowledge, and championship mindset to help take this program to the next level."
As a freshman in 2015, Santeramo started 17 games between the pipes for the Bulldogs and finished the season ranked third in the league in goals against average (9.79) and fifth in save percentage (.409). She helped propel Bryant to victories over Robert Morris and Wagner in the conference tournament as the Bulldogs claimed their second-consecutive Northeast Conference crown and berth to the NCAA Tournament.
Santeramo followed up her impressive rookie year with her first of two All-NEC First Team selections as a sophomore in 2016. The net minder led the league in save percentage (.495) and goals against average (7.67), numbers that placed her among the top-16 in the nation in both categories. Santeramo, who finished the year with a 12-2 record in goal, yielded just 97 goals on the season.
Santeramo was once again named to the All-NEC First Team during her junior campaign in 2017 after leading the league in save percentage (.508) and goals against average (8.91), and placing among the top-10 goalies in the nation in both categories. In the NEC Playoffs, she made a combined 26 saves, including 17 in the championship game against Wagner, to lead the Bulldogs to another NEC Title. Santeramo was named the NEC Tournament MVP and earned All-Tournament Team honors.
In her final season at Bryant in 2018, she registered a career-high 157 saves and posted her second-straight season with a save percentage over .500. Santeramo and the Bulldogs were able to advance to their sixth-straight NEC Championship Game after clipping the Mount, 9-8, in the Semifinals, but eventually fell to Wagner in double overtime in the title match. Santeramo finished her career with a 46-16 record, giving her the program record for most career wins.
Santeramo graduated from Bryant in 2018 with a degree in marketing.
