Emmitsburg, Md. (April 7, 2017) – Robert Morris came back from a late two-goal deficit to edge Mount St. Mary's University, 7-6, in the Northeast Conference women's lacrosse opener on Friday at Waldron Family Stadium.
The Mount scored three unanswered goals to open the second half of play to take a 6-4 advantage over Robert Morris with under 14 minutes remaining in the contest. Kelly Maloney scored the first two goals during the stretch before Taylor Carhart capped it off with a goal at the 13:51 mark to stretch the Mountaineer lead to a pair, their largest of the game.
Maggie Stella answered back for the Colonials, finding the back of the net with 13:27 showing on the clock to trim the RMU deficit to 6-5. Just over a minute later, Dana Davis evened the game at 6-all on an unassisted tally.
Stella completed the hat trick with her third goal of the contest at the 11:15 mark, which put the Colonials back on top for the first time since the closing minutes of the first half.
The Mount wasn't able to find the game-tying goal in the final 11-plus minutes as Robert Morris held on for the 7-6 victory to improve to 7-4 overall and 1-0 in NEC play. With the loss, the Mount falls to 1-8 overall and 0-1 in conference.
Stella led all scorers in the contest with three scores, while Annie Sachs registered a pair of goals and one assist.
For the Mount, Sammie Knapp topped the squad with a four-point day on two goals and a pair of assists. Maloney added two goals and one helper, and Taylor Carhart and Carly Miller netted the team's other goals.
Katelyn Miller earned the win between the pipes for RMU, stopping nine shots on the day. Her counterpart, Jillian Petito made 12 saves in goal for the Mount, marking her third game with double-digit saves this season.
The Mount heads to Saint Francis U to continue conference play on Sunday, April 9 at 1 p.m.
