Emmitsburg, Md. (February 26, 2017) – Freshmen Kate Kinsella and Carly Miller combined for five goals and a pair of assists, but the Mount St. Mary's University women's lacrosse team was edged by Longwood, 13-10, in the Mount's season opener on Sunday at Waldron Family Stadium.
Kinsella registered a hat trick in her collegiate debut, tallying a team-high three goals to go along with one assist, while Miller added a pair of goals and one assist as the rookie duo combined for seven points. Sophomore Taylor Carhart (2g) was the other Mountaineer to tally a multi-goal performance.
Riley Dolan, Stephanie Roberts and Cassie Angeles netted three goals each to pace Longwood, while Kaitlin Luccarelli added two goals and three assists and Lexi Davis dished out four helpers.
Jillian Petito took the loss in net for the Mount despite making eight saves, and her counterpart, Imani West, picked up the win with a seven-save performance.
Longwood recorded three of the opening four goals of the contest to jump out to the early lead, before the Mount tallied three straight as Marley Heller, Miller and Kinsella each registered unassisted tallied to give the Mountaineers their first lead of the contest, 4-3, just over eight minutes into the tilt.
The Lancers scored the next three over an eight-minute span to regain control, 6-4, but the Mount answered with the final pair of scores before halftime to tie things up at 6-6.
After an early second-half goal from Dolan, Carhart found the back of the net off a feed from Miller at the 22:37 mark to tie the game back up. Emily Davis then put the Mountaineers ahead on a free-position goal, and Sammie Knapp followed with her first goal minutes later to give the Mount a two-score cushion, 9-7, midway through the second.
The Lancers answered with the game's next three tallies, including a pair from Angeles, before Kinsella completed her hat trick and tied the game back up at 10-10 with 4:43 remaining.
Dolan gave Longwood a one-goal advantage at the 2:54 mark with her third goal of the contest, and Roberts essentially sealed the Longwood win with a goal off a feed from deCelis with 53 seconds left. Molly Barkman added the final tally with 12 seconds remaining as Longwood went on for the 13-10 victory.
The Lancers held slight advantages in shots (29-27) and ground balls (20-16), while the Mount won the draw control battle, 16-9. Jannel Daufenbach registered a team-high four draws and three ground balls for the Mount.
Mount St. Mary's is back in action at UMBC on Wednesday, March 1 at 4 p.m.
