The Mount kicks off the 2017 women's lacrosse season with a matchup against the Longwood Lancers on Sunday, February 26 at 3 p.m. at Waldron Family Stadium. The tilt will be streamed live on NECFrontRow.com.
The Mount returns 17 total players from last year's squad that finished with a 3-4 conference record. Kelly Maloney (30g, 9a), Sammie Knapp (27g, 6a), and Nicole Lantuh (26g, 7a) all return as three of the Mount's top goal scorers from the 2016 season. Taylor Carhart also returns this year after a freshman season when she recorded 10 goals and 3 assists and was named to the NEC All-Rookie Team. Knapp, Alex Carhart, and Jannel Daufenbach were each named to the All-NEC Second Team last year.
Third-year Head Coach Lauren Schwarzmann added seven new freshmen – Marie Dickson (Blue Bell, Pa.), Maisy Haney (Woodbine, Md.), Ashley Hedrick (Pylesville, Md.), Kate Kinsella (Wall, N.J.), Carly Miller (Marriottsville, Md.), Kaitlyn Ridenour (Boonsboro, Md.) and Elicia Wells (Richmond, Va.) – and a pair of sophomores – Maggie Allison (Fenwich Island, Del.) and Cali Magee (Owings, Md.) – to this year's squad.
Seniors Sammie Knapp and Alex Carhart along with junior Emily Dees were named team captains for the 2017 season.
The Mountaineers were picked fifth in the Northeast Conference Preseason Coaches Poll. Bryant was tabbed the league favorite with seven first-place votes, while reigning NEC Champion Wagner was selected second.
The Lancers are 2-2 on the season, and are on a two-game winning streak after cruising past Howard, 24-2, last time out. Stephanie Roberts leads the offensive attack with a team-high 11 goals on the season. Imani West owns a .494 save percentage in net and has allowed 40 goals through the opening four.
Sunday's game marks the eighth all-time matchup between the Mount and Longwood with the Lancers holding a slight 4-3 advantage. Last season, Longwood posted a 16-9 win on its home field behind seven points (4g, 3a) from Katie McHugh and five (3g, 2a) from Madison Stair. Sammie Knapp and Nicole Lantuh paced the Mount with a combined five goals in the contest.
The Mountaineers hit the road to face UMBC on March 1 at 4 p.m.
