Strong Pitching Peformances Lead Mount Softball to Sweep over Visiting Fairleigh Dickinson.

Emmitsburg, Md. (April 6, 2019)—Mount St. Mary's capitalized on a pair of fantastic pitching performances to sweep a Northeast Conference doubleheader at Our Lady of the Meadows Field on campus on Saturday afternoon.  The Mount (16-19, 3-3 NEC) posted a 5-2 victory in the opening game before winning game two, 1-0, in eight innings.  Katie Olson tossed a three-hit shutout in game two while Amanda Berkley retired 17 batters in a row in the Mount's game one victory.

GAME 1:  Mount St. Mary's 5, Fairleigh Dickinson 2

Morgan Alisauckas went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI while Berkley tossed a four-hit complete game with six strikeouts to lead the Mount to a 5-2 victory in the opening game of the twinbill.

Alisauckas got things started early by belting a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning to give the Mount a 2-0 lead.  Kaylee Stoner reached on an error to open off the inning, and moved to second on a Maggie Kane sacrifice bunt.  Alisauckas then laced a 2-2 pitch over the fence in left to give the Mount the lead.

The Mount added to the lead with a run in the bottom of the third.  Stoner singled and Kane walked with one out to put runners on first and second.  Alisauckas then came through with a single to center to plate Stoner for a 3-0 lead.  Mount St. Mary's added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 5-0 lead.  Lindsay Heinze and Shelbee Holcomb each walked to open the inning.  Pinch runners Lexi Donovan and Erin Meagher moved up one base on a passed ball, and Kaia Bonshock delivered with a two-run single up the middle to make it 5-0.

Berkley was on cruise control throughout the game.  After allowing a pair of two-out singles in the top of the first, Berkley settled down to retire the 17 batters in a row.  FDU's Reanna Cervantes ruined Berkley's shutout bid when she hit a solo home run to right, and Abby England followed with a solo shot of her own to right to make it 5-2.  Berkley struck out the next batter and retired Holly Mercier on a fly out to left to end the game.

GAME 2:  Mount St. Mary's 1, Fairleigh Dickinson 0 (8 innings)

Kaylee Stoner hit a walk-off RBI single while Olson threw a three-hit shutout to lead Mount St. Mary's to a 1-0 win in eight innings in the second game to complete the sweep.

The game was a classic pitcher's duel with FDU's Baylee Ports and the Mount's Olson keeping the offenses at bay throughout the contest.

Ports retired nine consecutive batters after Stoner hit a leadoff double in the first, while Olson faced the minimum 12 batters while carrying a no-hitter into the top of the fifth inning.

FDU (8-25, 1-3 NEC) put back-to-back one-out singles in the top of the fifth to put runners on first and second, but the Mount got out of the jam when Mariah made a leaping catch on a liner to short, doubling up the runner on second on the play to end the frame.

The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the eighth. With one out, Godde drew a walk to give the Mount a baserunner.  Godde then stole second base to put the potential winning run in scoring position.  Stoner came through with a line drive base hit to center field.  Godde was sent home on the play, and she beat the throw home, making a nice slide to give the Mount the victory.

Bonshock went 2-for-3 while Stoner was 2-for-4 at the plate in the win.  Olson struck out a pair while allowing just three hits in the complete-game victory.

NOTES:  Olson improves to 3-3 on the season while lowering her season earned run average to 1.98 in 53.0 innings of work…Lindsay Heinze reached base in each game, and has now reached base in 20 consecutive games…Stoner went 3-for-7 at the plate in the doubleheader, and has reached base in 16 consecutive contests.

UP NEXT:  The Mount hosts Saint Francis U for a pair of games tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. at Our Lady of the Meadows Field.
