Mount Softball Drops Two at George Washington

Washington, D.C. (February 22, 2019)--Mount St. Mary dropped both ends of a doubleheader at George Washington on Friday afternoon.  After falling 5-1 in the opening game, the Mount lost 7-6 in game two.  Lindsay Heinze provided the power with a home run in each game for the Mountaineers.

GAME 1:  George Washington 5, Mount St. Mary's 1

George Washington (5-2) downed the Mount, 5-1, in the opening game of the twinbill.  Lindsay Heinze hit a solo home run to provide the Mount's offense in the contest.

The Colonials took the early lead when Sierra Lange tripled and then scored on a Priscilla Martinez double.  George Washington added to the lead in the third on a Jenna Cone RBI double.

The Mount had a chance to cut into the deficit in the top of the fourth when Alisauckas led the inning off with a triple to center field.  The Colonials defense was up to the task, however, by retiring Alisauckas at the plate when she tried to score on a one-out grounder to third.  George Washington then added to the lead in the bottom of the inning when Martinez singled, moved to second on a bunt, and scored on a Marta Fuentes base hit.  The Colonials scored a pair of runs in the fifth to push the advantage to 5-0.

The Mount (1-6) broke up Lange's shutout bid in the top of the sixth when Heinze belted a solo home run, her second long ball of the season.

Berkley started for the Mount, allowing three runs and 10 hits in four innings of work.  Olson pitched the final two innings, allowing a pair of runs while striking out two.  Lange struck out 11 while tossing a two-hit complete-game for George Washington.  Cone and Martinez each went 3-for-3 at the plate.

GAME 2:  George Washington 7, Mount St. Mary's 6

Mount St. Mary's rallied from a four-run deficit, but saw George Washington score twice in the bottom of the seventh for a 7-6 win in game two.  Lindsay Heinze went 3-for-3 with a home run and two RBI in the victory.

George Washington scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first to grab a 2-0 advantage.  The Mount sliced the lead in half in the top of the second.  Heinze led off with a single before Emilee Kirk grounded into a fielder's choice.  Kirk moved to second on a Kaylee Stoner groundout to first, and she came around to score on Megan Black's single to right field.

The Mount had a chance to even the score in the top of the fourth.  Heinze led off the inning with a single up the middle, and Kirk reached on an error to put runners on first and second with no outs.  Stoner advanced the runners with a bunt, but Black popped into a double play on a squeeze bunt attempt.

The Colonials scored three times in the fifth to push the lead to 5-1.  Jenny Cone hit a two-run homer while Faith Weber added an RBI single in the innng.

The Mount fought back with three runs in the top of the sixth to make it a one-run game.  Maggie Kane was hit by a pitch, and she scored on a Morgan Alisauckas double.  Heinze followed with a two-run homer, her second of the day, to make it 5-4.

The Mount rallied to take the lead in the top of the seventh.  Shelbee Holcomb came through with a one-out single, and pinch runner Lexi Donovan moved to second on a Kirsten Mumma groundout.  Kane then put runners on the corners with an infield single, and Alisauckas brought home both runners with a double to center field.

The Colonials scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to earn the win.  A single and an error put runners on first and second with no outs, and Sierra Lange tied the game with a single up the middle.  Weber then singled home the winning run.

Katie Olson picked up the win with 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.  Avery Neuhart started, allowing five runs in 4.1 innings of work.  Amanda Berkley took the loss.
