ABOUT UMKC:  UMKC opened the season with a 3-2 record at the Total Control Sports Invitational hosted by Loyola-Chicago.  The Kangaroos collected wins against Detroit, IUPUI and Western Illinois.  Sydney Garcia hit .474 in the five games while the pitching staff compiled a 1.53 ERA during the tournament.

ABOUT MOREHEAD STATE:  Morehead State opened the 2019 season with an 0-4 record at the Phyllis Rafter Memorial Tournament hosted by Kennesaw State.  Princess Valencia went 5-for-8 (.625) at the plate to pace Morehead State, which had losses to Chattanooga (twice), Ohio and Kennesaw State.

ABOUT IUPUI:  IUPUI went 0-5 at the Total Control Sports Invitational hosted by Loyola-Chicago last weekend.  Delainey Turner hit .400 for IUPUI in the five games while Sabrina Trevino hit .375.

ABOUT GEORGIA SOUTHERN:  Georgia Southern went 4-2 while hosting the Bash in the Boro to open the 2019 season.  The Eagles split a pair of games with defending Northeast Conference champion Saint Francis U.  Mekhia Freeman (.529) and Hannah Ferrell (.500) pace the offense while Ashleigh Morton went 1-1 with a 2.69 ERA to lead the pitching staff.

THE ALL-TIME SERIES…
vs. Georgia Southern:  The Mountaineers are 1-2 all-time against Georgia Southern.  This will be the first matchup between the two teams since a doubleheader on March 10, 2011.  The Mount won the first game of that twinbill, 4-2, before falling, 10-1, in the nightcap.  The first all-time meeting was a 5-2 Georgia Southern win on March 13, 2004.

vs. IUPUI:  This is the first-ever meeting between the Mount and IUPUI.

vs. Morehead State:  This will be the first-ever meeting between the Mount and Morehead State.

vs. UMKC:  The Mount lost to UMKC last year, 6-4, on March 28 in a game played at UMBC that was the first-ever meeting between the two squads.

PRESEASON POLL:  The Mount was tabbed to finish in seventh in the annual Northeast Conference Preseason Coaches Poll.  Sacred Heart was the unanimous pick to win it all, followed by LIU Brooklyn, Saint Francis U, Central Connecticut, Bryant, Fairleigh Dickinson, the Mount, Wagner and Robert Morris.  The Mount finished tied for sixth in the NEC standings last year with a 7-9 league record.

SEASON OPENERS:  The Mountaineers are 3-5 all-time in season openers during head coach Anna Nagro's tenure.  The Mount lost last year's season opener to North Texas, 6-2.  The Mount's last win in a season opener was a 14-1 victory over North Carolina Central on Feb. 25, 2017.  The Mount is 10-28 all-time in season openers.

2018 RECAP:  The Mountaineers posted a 17-26-1 overall record and a 7-9 mark in the Northeast Conference last season.  Morgan Alisauckas led the team with a .316 average while Lindsay Heinze hit .294 with team-highs of 11 doubles and 27 RBI.  Alisauckas and Heinze tied for the team lead with six home runs each.  In the circle, Katie Olson (5-4, 4.20 ERA), Amanda Berkley (7-7, 4.28 ERA) and Jordan Weaver (5-12, 4.88 ERA) all return for the Mount this year.

HEAD COACH ANNA NAGRO:  Nagro begins her ninth season at the helm of the Mount softball program, the longest tenure by a head coach in the history of the program.  Nagro has led the Mount to 37 wins over the past two seasons, including 20 in 2017, the most by a Mount team since the 2010 campaign.

UP NEXT:  The Mount is back in action next weekend at the Pirate-Spartan Classic.  The Mount will face St. Bonaventure and Hampton on Saturday, Feb. 23, at Hampton. The tournament closes out on Sunday, February 24, with the Mount facing Morehead State and Norfolk State at Norfolk State.
