Mount Softball Takes Two at Savannah State

Savannah, Ga. (Feb. 28, 2018)—Mount St. Mary's swept Savannah State in a softball doubleheader on Wednesday.  The Mount captured the first game, 12-3, before taking game two, 5-3.  With the victories, the Mount improves to 5-6 on the season.

Mount St. Mary's 12, Savannah State 3 (Game 1)

Mount St. Mary's scored eight runs in the top of the sixth inning to break open a one-run game in a 12-3 win over Savannah State.  Marian Ruf hit a pair of home runs to pace the Mount to the victory.

Ruf went 2-for-4 with two home runs and three RBI in the win while Kirsten Mumma was 3-for-3 with a pair of RBI.  Lindsay Heinze went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI while Lexi Donovan added a pinch hit two-run homer in the game.  Shelbee Holcomb was 1-for-1 with a pair of walks and three stolen bases for the Mountaineers as well.

Freshman Amanda Berkley allowed three runs, striking out four, in five innings of work to pick up the victory.  Katie Olson tossed a scoreless sixth inning.

The Mount struck for a pair of runs in the top of the first inning when Heinze walked with two outs, and Ruf followed with a two-run homer.  The Mount extended the lead in the second when Holcomb walked, stole second, and scored on a Mumma base hit.

Savannah State rallied to even the score with three runs in the bottom of the third.  Elizabeth Humes singled home the first run, the second scored on a fielder's choice, and Amanda Hallman's two-out RBI single tied the game.

The Mount loaded the bases in the top of the fourth on a Holcomb single, a Shea McFarland walk and a Berkley base hit.  Mumma then singled to left to plate Holcomb with the go-ahead run.

The Mount broke the game open with eight runs in the top of the sixth.  The Mount manufactured the first run when Holcomb walked, and then stole second.  McFarland walked, and then the Mount had a double-steal with Holcomb scoring on the play on a Savannah State error.  Berkley then brought home pinch-runner Erin Meagher when she reached on an error on a sacrifice bunt to make it 6-3.  Mumma singled, and after a pair of outs, Heinze belted a three-run homer to make it 9-3.  Ruf followed with a solo shot to center, and after an Emilee Kirk single, Donovon closed out the scoring with a pinch-hit two-run homer.

Mount St. Mary's 5, Savannah State 3 (Game 2)

Mount St. Mary's scored five times in the top of the first and held on for a 5-3 win over Savannah State in the second game.  Starting pitcher Jordan Weaver struck out seven in five innings of work to improve to 3-1 on the season.

The Mount (5-6) loaded the bases in the top of the first on a Kaylee Stoner single, a Mumma doubled, and a Morgan Alisauckas walk.  Heinze followed with a two-run double to left, and Ruf's RBI fielder's choice made it 3-0.  A pair of Savannah State errors helped the Mount to two more runs in the frame.

Savannah State fought back with single runs in the first, fifth and seventh, but Katie Olson was able to close out the game for her first save of the season.

The Mount is back in action with a pair of games on Friday at the Buffalo Wild Wings Classic hosted by USC Upstate.  The Mount will play Delaware State and host USC Upstate.
