Rachel Heinze Named Northeast Conference Player of the Year; Rachel Heinze and Lindsay Heinze Each Named First Team All-NEC

May 10, 2017—Mount St. Mary's senior Rachel Heinze (Charlotte Hall, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) has been named the Northeast Conference Softball Player of the Year.  Heinze is the first player in Mount history to win NEC Player of the Year Honors.  In addition, Heinze was named First Team All-NEC at the catcher position while her cousin, Lindsay Heinze (Charlotte Hall, Md./St. Mary's Ryken), was named First Team All-NEC at third base.  It is the first time that the Mount has two players on the All-NEC First Team since 2010.

Rachel Heinze had a monster senior season, hitting .407 with 15 doubles, 17 home runs, 49 RBI and 56 runs scored.  She led the NEC in hitting (.407) while she was second in home runs (17) and RBI (49) and third in runs scored (56) and doubles (15).  She also led the NEC in both slugging percentage (.860) and on-base percentage (.492) while hitting .378 in 16 NEC games this year.

In addition to becoming the first Mountaineer to win NEC Player of the Year honors, Rachel Heinze is the first Mount player to earn First Team All-NEC honors in consecutive seasons.  Last year, she was named First Team All-NEC at the utility position while also collecting the league's Most Improved Player award.  She also joins Liz Christiansen as the only Mount players to earn First Team All-League honors two times in their career.

Rachel Heinze finished her career at the Mount as the all-time leader in home runs (43), runs scored (128), RBI (121) and total bases (327) while she is second in slugging percentage (.690) and doubles (35), third in hits (157), sixth in batting average (.331) and sixth in stolen bases (32).  She set the Mount's single-season record for home runs with 19 last year, while her 56 runs scored and 129 total bases this season are new school records.

Rachel Heinze had several standout games during the 2017 season, including a three-home run performance in the Mount's 17-3 win over UMBC.  She became the first Mount player to have three homers in a game since Christiansen in 2010.  She finished the game 3-for-3 with three home runs, four runs scored and six RBI.  Earlier in the year, she homered in three consecutive games (Yale, La Salle and Indiana State) while she had seven games this season with three hits.

Lindsay Heinze is the Mount's first All-NEC selection at third base since Amanda Buckel in 2010.  She finished the 2017 season hitting .342 with 17 doubles, six home runs and 37 RBI while starting all 51 games.  Her 17 doubles matched a Mount single-season record set by Amanda Burk in 2006, and are second in the Northeast Conference.  She went 3-for-4 with three doubles, three runs scored and three RBI in a win over Coppin State in April, and had 15 games with two or more hits, including five in a row in March.  Her 37 RBI this season are the fifth-best single-season mark in Mount history.
