MOUNT UPDATE: Mount St. Mary's split a doubleheader with UMBC at home on Wednesday to move to 20-29 on the season. Rachel Heinze hit three home runs to lead the Mount to a 17-3 win in the opening game of the doubleheader. Emilee Kirk added a pair of homers with Lindsay Heinze also dialing long distance as the Mount pounded out 17 hits and six home runs in the win. The Retrievers won game two, 5-3.
ABOUT THE COLONIALS: Robert Morris lost a pair of NEC doubleheaders at home last weekend to fall to 17-31 overall and 7-7 in the NEC. The Colonials were downed by Sacred Heart (1-0, 9-2) on Sunday and Wagner (10-2, 9-2) on Monday. Robert Morris can clinch a spot in the NEC Tournament with two wins against the Mount, or with one win and a Sacred Heart victory over Fairleigh Dickinson. Jordan Gurganus leads Robert Morris with a .391 average while Abrielle McCartney is hitting .344. Olivia Lorusso leads the team with 12 doubles, 10 home runs and 36 RBI. In the circle, Kaitlin Ellzy is 7-7 with a 2.66 ERA in 21 appearances while Laura Coulter is 5-13 with a 5.98 ERA in a team-high 30 appearances.
THE ALL-TIME SERIES: Robert Morris holds a 41-8 lead in the all-time series, including a 23-1 mark in Moon Township, Pa. Last year, the teams split a doubleheader at the Mount's Our Lady of the Meadows Field. The Mount captured the opening game, 4-1, before falling in the nightcap, 9-1. The Mount's 1-0 win over Robert Morris in 2014 snapped a 13-game losing streak to the Colonials.
LAST YEAR'S MEETING: Sam Lichtner needed just 61 pitches in a complete game to lead the Mount to a 4-1 win the opening game of last year's twinbill at Our Lady of the Meadows Field. THREE TIMES A CHARM FOR HEINZE: Senior Rachel Heinze blasted three home runs in the Mount's 17-3 win over UMBC on Wednesday. The last Mountaineer to hit three homers in a game was Liz Christiansen, who had three in a 12-1 win over Central Connecticut on March 28, 2010. Heinze leads the Northeast Conference with a .410 average while she is second with 17 home runs. The senior catcher has scored a school-record 55 runs this season while her 48 RBI are just two shy of the single-season mark set by Christiansen in 2010.
20-WINS: The Mount's 17-3 victory over UMBC gave the Mount its first 20-win season since the 2010 team finished the year with a 25-25 record. It is just the fourth time since the Mountaineers moved to NCAA Division I that the team has won 20 or more games in a season. The 2006 team set the school record with a 31-25 campaign in 2006 while the team went 25-25 in 2010 and 21-36 in 2008.
