Washington, D.C. (April 26, 2017)--Marian Ruf and Rachel Heinze combined for four home runs and 13 RBI to lead Mount St. Mary's to a doubleheader sweep at Howard on Wednesday night. The Mount won the opening game, 12-4, before taking game two, 13-1. Ruf went 4-for-7 with two home runs and seven RBI while Heinze was 3-for-5 with two home runs and six RBI in the twinbill.
In the opening game, Heinze's three-run homer in the top of the first inning pushed the Mount to a 3-0 advantage. Kaylee Stoner and Jessica Greenewald opened the frame with back-to-back singles to set the table for Heinze, who drove the ball over the center field fence.
Mount St. Mary's (19-26) added to the lead with four runs in the top of the third inning. Greenewald tripled to open in inning, and Heinze was walked. Lindsay Heinze drove in the first run of the inning when she reached on an error, and Morgan Alisauckas followed with a two-run double to make it 6-0. Ruf drove in the final run of the inning.
Lindsay Heinze's two-run double in the fourth stretched the advantage to 9-0. The Mount tacked on three runs in the top of the fifth with three runs for a 12-0 lead. Ruf belted a two-run homer to left while Greenwald chipped in an RBI single in the inning.
Howard scored four times in the bottom of the inning to round out the scoring.
Rachel Heinze went 1-for-2 with a home run, three RBI and three runs scored while Greenewald was 3-for-4 with a tiple and two runs scored in the game. Ruf was 1-for-3 with a home run and three RBI with Kaylee Stoner going 2-for-4 with two runs scored in the win.
Sam Lichtner tossed a complete game to earn the win and improve to 12-7 on the season. She struck out eight in five innings of work.
Mount St. Mary's scored five runs in the first and eight more in the second to roll to a 13-1 win in the second game.
In the first, Rachel Heinze's triple to right field plated Greenewald with the first run of the game. Lindsay Heinze's single made it 2-0, and Ruf added a double down the left field line for a 3-0 lead. Kaylee Cross added a two-run single to push the advantage to 5-0.
After Howard scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first, the Mount erupted for eight runs in the second to seal the win. Rachel Heinze belted a two-run home run and Ruf added a three-run shot in the inning. Stoner chipped in a two-run single and Greenewald a sacrifice fly as well.
Katie Olson earned the win, allowing an unearned run in five innings to improve to 2-2 on the season.
The Mount is back in action on Saturday, April 29, with a 1:00 p.m. home game against Bryant. It is Senior Day, and the Mountaineers will honor the senior class following the game.
