Mount Softball Falls to Wagner in NEC Doubleheader on Monday Afternoon

April 24, 2017—The Mount St. Mary's softball team dropped both games of a Northeast Conference doubleheader at Wagner on Monday afternoon.  Mount St. Mary's was edged in the opener, 2-1, before falling, 15-3, in the nightcap.  Rachel Heinze went 3-for-3 with four walks for the Mountaineers in the twinbill.

Game 1:  Wagner 2, Mount St. Mary's 1

In the opening game of the twinbill, Wagner scored single runs in the third and fourth innings to post a 2-1 victory.  Freshman Kaylee Stoner went 3-for-3 at the plate for the Mount in the game.

The Mount (17-26, 5-7 NEC) opened the scoring in the top of the third inning when Stoner and Morgan Alisauckas each singled to put runners on first and third with one out.  Jessica Greenewald followed with an RBI single to first base to plate Stoner with the first run of the game.  Rachel Heinze was intentionally walked to load the bases, but the Seahawks were able to escape the jam when Lindsay Heinze's line drive to short was turned into a double play.

Wagner (18-21, 8-4 NEC) tied the game with a run in the bottom of the frame.  With one out, Zoe Bender reached on an error on a bunt to put a runner on second base.  Stefanie Aplin's single put runners on the corners, and Brianna Tredway's ground out to second base scored Bender to tie the game at 1-1.

Mount St. Mary's had runners on first and second with no outs in the top of the fourth, but a double play and a strikeout ended the threat.  Wagner capitalized with a run in the bottom of the inning to take the lead.  Hannah Gilbert led off with a double and a walk to Amelia Van Orman put runners on first and second with no outs.  Alyssa Tucker's sacrifice moved the runners up, and Lauren Serrato's single to shortstop plated the go-ahead run.

The Mount loaded the bases with one out in the top of the fifth on a Stoner single, and walks to Alisauckas and Rachel Heinze.  Wagner pitcher Morgan Brown was able to escape the jam with a pop out and a groundout.

Sam Lichtner pitched a complete game for the Mount, allowing an unearned run with three strikeouts in six innings.  Brown scattered seven hits while allowing one run for the complete-game win for Wagner.

Game 2:  Wagner 15, Mount St. Mary's 3

Wagner scored four runs in each of the first two innings en route to a 15-3 win in game two to sweep the doubleheader.

The Seahawks took advantage of a pair of Mount errors in the first inning to take a 4-0 lead.  Gilbert had a two-run single with Van Orman adding an RBI single in the frame as well.

The Mount got a run back in the top of the second. Lindsay Heinze and Kaylee Cross each singled in the inning with Heinze coming home on a Wagner error to make it 4-1.  The Mount went on to load the bases with two outs, but Wagner was able to escape the jam when Greenewald grounded out.

Wagner's made it 8-1 with four runs in the bottom of the second.  After the Mount's Marian Ruf doubled home a run in the top of the third, Gilbert added a two-run single in the bottom of the inning to stretch the margin to 10-2.  Karen Prihoda hit a two-run homer and Gilbert chipped in a three-run shot in the bottom of the fourth to make it 15-2.  The Mount rounded out the scoring in the top of the fifth on a Ruf RBI single.

Heinze went 2-for-2 with two runs scored while Ruf was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI in the game.  Gilbert finished 3-for-4 with seven RBI for Wagner.

Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Wednesday, April 26, with a 7:00 p.m. doubleheader at Howard.
