Emmitsburg, Md. (March 26, 2017)--The Mount St. Mary's softball team dropped a pair of one-run games today to close out the Mount St. Mary's Invitational. The Mount fell to Cornell, 8-7, to open the day before a 7-6 loss to Morgan State in six innings in the last game of the day.
Game 1: Cornell 8, Mount St. Mary's 7
Cornell scored five times in the top of the sixth inning to rally for an 8-7 win over the Mountaineers. Emilee Kirk went 2-for-4 with a a three-run homer while Shea McFarland went 2-for-3 with two runs scored in the game.
The Big Red (5-6) scored three runs in the top of the first to take the lead. Megan Murray's two-run home run to center started the scoring while the third run came on a wild pitch.
Mount St. Mary's (6-18) took the lead with four runs in the bottom of the third inning. Kaylee Stoner and Jessica Greenewald had back-to-back singles to open the inning. After Rachel Heinze grounded into a fielder's choice, the Mount executed a double-steal to move the runners up. Lindsay Heinze followed with an RBI single to shortstop to put the Mount on the board. Morgan Alisauckas cut the deficit to 3-2 with an RBI double to right-center field. A walk loaded the bases, and Marian Ruf's two-run single up the middle gave the Mountaineers the lead.
Cornell regained the lead with five runs in the top of the sixth. The Big Red strung together five consecutive singles to gain the lead.
The Mount rallied in the seventh when Lindsay Heinze reached on an error, McFarland singled, and Kirk delivered with a three-run homer to left to make it 8-7. Cornell's Lisa Nelson was able to get the final two outs to preserve the win.
Ruf started for the Mount, allowing three runs in four innings. Kaylee Cross took the loss, allowing five runs in 1.1 innings of relief. Katie Olson and Sam Lichtner combined for 1.2 innings of scoreless relief for the Mountaineers.
Game 2: Morgan State 7, Mount St. Mary's 6 (6 inn.)
Morgan State rallied for a 7-6 win over the Mount in six innings in the second game of the day. The game was called due to the weather/darkness.
After Morgan State (9-10) scored twice in the top of the first to take the early lead, the Mount answered with a run in the bottom of the frame, and four more in the second to take a 5-2 lead.
In the second, Jessica Nines and Lexi Donovan walked to start the four-run rally. A Morgan State error loaded the bases, and Rachel Heinze's two-run single gave the Mount a 3-2 lead. Lindsay Heinze followed with a two-run single of her own to push the Mount advantage to 5-2.
Morgan State scored four times in the top of the fourth to take hte lead, taking advantage of a pair of Mount errors. The Mount tied it in the bottom of the fourth when Greenewald walked, and then scored when Rachel Heinze's single to left got through the left fielder for an error.
Audrianna Alvarez's RBI single in the top of the fifth drove in the winning run for Morgan State.
Lichtner started for the Mount, allowing six runs (three earned) in four innings. Lindsay Weaver allowed one run in two innings of relief.
The Mount is back in action on Tuesday, March 28, when Coppin State visits Our Lady of the Meadows Field for a doubleheader.
