Jackson Wood And Parth Sharma Take Home First Place For Mount Men's Tennis In Loyola Invitational

Baltimore, Md. (September 22, 2018) - The Mount St. Mary's men's tennis took home first, third, and ninth place in the Loyola Invitational on Saturday evening. The sophomore pair of Jackson Wood and Parth Sharma won their second straight doubles tournament to open up the Fall season. The duo earned first place in the doubles bracket of the Bucknell Invitational at the beginning of the month. The Mount's Jean Armstrong and Alonzo Garcia picked up third place while Evan Hine and Gabriel Santos recorded ninth place.

BRACKET / RESULTS

The invitational is a 'Points of the Compass' format, with each team consisting of two players and each round consisting of a doubles match and two singles matches. The winner of the best-of-three advances to the next round.

In the Semifinals, Jackson Wood and Parth Sharma defeated Johns Hopkins Alex Matisse and Ryan Hellinger 2-1. The Mountaineer duo topped the Hopkins duo 6-4 in the doubles match, Wood downed Matisse 6-2, 6-2 in the first singles match to clinch the victory for the Mount, but Hellinger edged Sharma 6-4, 6-3. In the Finals, Wood and Sharma blanked Loyola's Skyler Gates and Matt Fitzmaurice 3-0 to earn first place in the tournament. The Mount St. Mary's pair took down the Greyhounds pair 6-3 in the doubles match, Wood topped Gates 6-3, 6-1, and Sharma edged Fitzmaurice 7-6, 3-6, 10-6.

The second Mount pair in the Semifinals, Jean Armstrong and Alonzo Garcia dropped the match to Loyola's Gates and Fitzmaurice 2-1. The Loyola duo edged the Mountaineer duo 7-5 in the doubles match, Garcia tied the match up at 1-1 after he defeated Gates 6-2, 6-2 in the first singles slot, but Fitzmaurice clinched the match for the Greyhounds after he topped Armstrong 6-0, 6-2 in the second singles slot. Armstrong and Garcia downed the Johns Hopkins pair of Matisse and Hellinger 2-1 in the Southeast bracket for third place. The Loyola pair topped the Mount pair 6-3 in doubles, but Garcia defeated Matisse 7-5, 6-2 and Armstrong downed Hellinger 7-5, 6-0 to clinch the match for the Mountaineers.

After the Mount picked up a 2-1 victory in the Semifinals in the Consolation bracket, Gabriel Santos and Evan Hine edged Johns Hopkins Eric Yoo and Eric Burrer 2-1 in the Finals in the Consolation bracket for ninth place. Santos and Hine topped Yoo and Burrer 7-5 in doubles, Santos clinched the match after he defeated Yoo 4-0 due to an injury in the first singles slot, but Burrer clipped Hine 5-7, 6-2, 11-9 in the second singles slot.

The Mount St. Mary's men's tennis team returns home for the Mount Invitational next weekend, September 28-30.
