Emmitsburg, Md. (October 6, 2017) – Mount St. Mary's men's tennis team wrapped up day one of the Mount Invitational on Friday night in Emmitsburg. All eight Mountaineers made it to the semifinals in their respected flights in singles play. In both singles and doubles, the Mount men scored a record of 11-1 during the first day of the tournament.
Jackson Wood topped Venkatesh Ramkumar, from Delaware, 6-4, 6-3 to start the day off for Mount St. Mary's in flight A. Brandon Wortkotter also advanced in flight A after he defeated Bucknell's Ben Gerber 6-1, 7-5. In flight B, Parth Sharma edged Drew Krantz, from Bucknell, 6-2, 6-2 and Zachary Burau blanked Igor De Souza, from Coppin State, 6-0, 6-0 to advance to the semifinals. Jean Armstrong received a default win in flight C after Loyola's Tyler Blessing dropped out of the tournament. Evan Hine and Chris Lindsey advanced to the semifinals of flight D after Hine topped Coppin State's Andres Diaz 6-1, 6-3 and Lindsey defeated Andre Sturniola, from Coppin State, 6-4, 6-1. In flight E, Sean McNulty edged Harford Community College's Treston Diaz 6-2, 6-3 to advance to the semifinals as well.
Wood and Wortkotter topped Loyola's Hoffarth and Gower 6-4 in flight A of doubles competition. Armstrong and Sharma joined them in the semifinals of flight A by defeating Selby and La Gloan, from Harford Community College, 6-1. Hine and Burau edged HCC's Tesfit and Brett 6-4 to advance to the semifinals in flight B. McNulty and Lindsey will play in the semifinals on the consolation side after Bucknell's Krantz and Crastes topped them 6-4.
The Mount men will finish the tournament up tomorrow, Saturday October 7, due to the incoming rain forecasted for Sunday. Play will begin at 9:00 AM tomorrow morning.
