Lewisburg, Pa (September 10, 2017) – Senior Brandon Wortkotter of the Mount St. Mary's University men's tennis team claimed the title at the No. 2 singles flight at the Bucknell Fall Invite as the Mountaineers wrapped up competition on Sunday.
Wortkotter topped CJ Cash of Loyola (6-0, 6-4,) Sebastian Pinos of Saint Francis U (6-7, 7-6, 11-9) and Jan Leithner of Hofstra (6-1, 3-6, 11-9) to earn a berth in the finals. Wortkotter then defeated Max McDonald of Bucknell (6-4, 6-4) to capture the second flight championship.
Mount freshman Parth Sharma registered a pair of victories at the No. 3 flight. Sharma claimed his first collegiate win in round one over Kyle Gower of Loyola, 0-6, 7-5 (10-7), and followed with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Bucknell's Drew Kantz in the second round.
The Mount's other two freshmen, Jackson Wood and Evan Hine, also advanced to the second round of their respective flights with their first career victories. Wood topped Loyola's Reid Burch at the second flight, 2-6, 7-5 (10-4), and Hine defeated Lafayette's Drew Rooks at No. 4 singles by a 6-2, 6-4 margin.
Sophomore Jean Armstrong was the other Mountaineer to claim a single win, topping Lafayette's Daniel Kamer at the third flight, 6-3, 6-7 (10-6).
In doubles action, Zachary Burau and Wood reached the consolation finals at the top flight. After falling in the opening round, the duo claimed two straight victories to reach the consolation championship, where they eventually fell by a 6-4 margin to Bucknell's duo of Kane and Garramone.
The Mountaineers return to competition at the Loyola Invitational spanning September 22-24 in Baltimore.
