The Mountaineer women opened the 2018-19 campaign with a 126-80 victory over VMI as they took first place in nine of 12 events at the meet. After beginning with a first-place showing in the 200 medley relay, the Mountaineers kept things rolling by winning each of the next three events. Mary Lombardi claimed a first-place finish in the 1000 free (10:58.59), Maggie deTar won the 200 free (2:01.81), and Valeria Villagran earned the top spot in the 50 free (25.84), as the trio helped the Mount take a commanding lead. The Mount claimed three more individual wins in swimming events during the meet as Juliet Whitman won the 100 fly (1:02.20), Maddie McGraw touched the wall first in the 100 free (54.72), and rookie Elizabeth Fahrney recorded her first collegiate victory, placing first in the 500 free (5:38.09). Laura Kingham recorded the top score in the 1-meter diving event to collect the win with a 162.65. In the final event of the meet, the Mount's relay team won the 200 free relay.
On the men's side, Will Twizell paced the Mountaineers with a pair of individual victories, but the Mount fell to VMI by a 137-90 margin. The Mount opened the meet strong by registering the top-two finishes in the 200 medley relay. The squad of Jonathan Mata, Twizell, Ryan Carroll and Brock Cudahy took first place in the event with a time of 1:37.47. Twizell claimed his first individual victory of the afternoon in the 200 IM, touching the wall in 1:59.21 to place first. John Wilson was just behind Twizell, finishing with a time of 2:01.69 to earn a second-place finish. The duo of Twizell and Wilson also finished 1-2 in the 100 breast, with times of 58.71 and 1:01.53, respectively. Ryan Carroll posted the Mount's other individual win on the afternoon, taking first in the 100 fly with a time of 53.92.
The men's team returns to action on October 26 and 27 at the Liberty Invitational. The following weekend, both Mountaineer teams are set to host Howard and Monmouth in the Mount's first home meet of the season on November 3.
