The Mount St. Mary's men's and women's swimming & diving teams open the 2017-18 season with competition against VMI this Friday (Oct. 6) and Saturday (Oct. 7) at the Mount Swimming Pool. Action on Friday will begin at 2:30 p.m., followed by an 11 a.m. start on Saturday. Both days will be streamed live for free at NECFrontRow.com.

2016-17 SEASON RECAP
The Mount St. Mary's women's team finished the 2016-17 regular season at 4-2 overall in dual meets with victories over VMI, Manhattan, Howard and St. Francis Brooklyn. The Mountaineers closed out the campaign with a seventh-place showing at the NEC Championships. At the championships, Maggie deTar led the way with a pair of top-10 finishes in the 500 and 1650 freestyle events, and Maddie McGraw set a new program record in the 100 back (57.76).

The Mount St. Mary's men's squad wrapped up an impressive inaugural season in 2016-17 by sending six qualifying swimmers to the ECAC Championships. Will Twizell (200 IM, 400 IM, 100 breast), Brock Cudahy (50 free, 100 free, 200 free), Aidan McCormick (100 fly, 100 breast, 200 breast), Vincent Huang (100 breast, 200 breast), Andrew Quinan (50 free) and Liam Taylor (200 free) were the six Mountaineers to qualify for the ECACs. Huang earned the Mount's top finish, placing sixth in the 100 breast.

MEN'S NEWCOMERS
The men's team added eight freshmen to help bolster this year's squad heading into the program's second season. Max Blake (Harrisburg, Pa.), Ryan Carroll (Marlton, N.J.), Thomas de Xavier (Toronto, Canada), Jason Dyson (West Deptford, N.J.), Jonathan Mata (Harrisburg, Pa.), Ethan Pham (Tomball, Texas), Ian Schirra (Pittsburgh, Pa.), Nicholas Starvaggi (Frederick, Md.) and John Wilson (Pittsburgh, Pa.) make up the Mount's 2017-18 recruiting class.

WOMEN'S NEWCOMERS
The women's squad added seven newcomers for the upcoming season. Gabrielle Benedictis (Westminster, Md.), Laura Kingham (Haddon Township, N.J.), Lizanne Passaro (Silver Spring, Md.), Mia Ruffin (Juneau, Alaska), Valeria Villagran (Lonetree, Colo.), Erin Vopalensky (Spokane, Wash) and Juliet Whitman (Fredericksburg, Va.) enter their first season with the Mount this year.

COACHING STAFF ADDITIONS
Head Coach Neil Yost bolstered his staff for the upcoming season with the addition of Assistant Coaches Marissa Frollo and Kiet Luong. Click here to read more about the new assistants.

NEC PRESEASON POLL
The Mount St. Mary's women's team was picked to finish seventh in the Northeast Conference Preseason Coaches Poll. Three-time defending champion Central Connecticut was tabbed the preseason favorite, while Bryant and Wagner rounded out the top-three in the poll.
