Mountaineers Play to 1-1 Draw at American University

Washington, D.C. (September 7, 2018) – Mount St. Mary's held a 1-0 advantage for the majority of the second half following Joel Tshiani's 47th minute goal, but American University tallied the game-tying score in the 84th minute on a penalty kick to send the game into overtime. Both teams were held off the scoresheet in the extra periods, as the match ended in a 1-1 draw.

"I'm proud of the way our players battled today," said Head Coach Bryan Cunningham. "It was tough conditions from start to finish, but the players kept their composure even after the tying goal. We are getting closer, and that is promising."

American (1-2-1) had some early chances in the contest, firing four shots in the opening 10 minutes of play. Mount goalkeeper Bobby Edwards was able to keep American off the board as he stopped both on-target shots in the early going.

Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the first half of play. American outshot the Mount by a 7-1 mark in the frame, with Yann Kouemi registering the lone shot for the Mountaineers.

Just over a minute into the second half, the Mount earned its first corner kick of the match. Freshman Jonathan Godette sent the corner into the box, where Tshiani finished it off for his first goal with the Mountaineers to give them a 1-0 advantage.

The Mount (0-3-1) held American off the board for the ensuing 37 minutes of play until the Eagles finally broke through for their first tally of the game. With just six and a half minutes remaining in the match, Fabio Massaro converted a penalty kick for his second goal of the season to tie things at 1-1.

American closed out regulation with a 19-6 shot advantage over the Mount, including a 7-1 margin in shots on target.

The Eagles fired off five shots in the pair of overtime periods, but couldn't slip one past Edwards as the match ended in a 1-1 draw. Edwards' seven-save performance was a season-high for the grad student.

The Mount's game at George Mason originally scheduled for Sunday, September 9 was postponed. The Mountaineers will be back in action this coming Wednesday, September 12, as they welcome in Howard to Waldron Family Stadium for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
