EMMITSBURG, Md. – Zoncher Dennis (Swarthmore, Pa./Swarthmore), a member of the Mount St. Mary's men's soccer team, has been named the adidas/Northeast Conference (NEC) Rookie of the Week for the Week of Aug. 28-Sept. 4. It is the freshman's first conference honor.
Dennis, a freshman midfielder, notched his first collegiate goal in a 1-all result against Towson on Thursday. The freshman, who was also making his collegiate debut in the match, was able to find the back of the twine off an unsettling situation from a pass from senior Kyle Patrick (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) at the 50:02 mark to give the Mountaineers a 1-0 advantage against the Tigers. Dennis has one goal for two points on two shots on the year.
It marks the 11th time the Mount has received NEC Rookie of the Week honors and first since sophomore Koudzo Komlan (Upper Darby, Pa./Upper Darby) took home the award for the week of Sept. 6-12, 2010. Senior Chris Wheeler (Newcastle, Australia/St. Francis Xavier) took home the award three times in 2008 while Eric Detzel (2007), Neill Ouska (2006), Steve Cant (2004), Mark Murphy (2002), Matt Moneymaker (2000) and Brian Crum (1998) have also been recognized by the league as the Rookie of the Week.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Friday at the Lafayette Tournament against the host Leopards. Match time is 7 p.m.
