Emmitsburg, Md. (April 8, 2017) – Mount St. Mary's University erased a four-goal deficit in the second half to come back and defeat Bucknell, 12-10, in non-conference men's lacrosse action at Waldron Family Stadium on Saturday.
Four different Mountaineers registered multi-goal games, including Spencer Smith (3g, 1a) and Bubba Johnson (2g, 2a), who combined for eight points in the tilt. Chris DiPretoro and Ryan Lamon chipped in with a pair of goals apiece.
Matt Vierheller collected his fourth win of the season between the pipes for the Mount, stopping 11 shots to record his fifth straight game with double-digit saves.
Quinn Collison and Connor O'Hara paced Bucknell in the tilt with three goals and one assist each, while Will Sands added two goals and a pair of assists.
Christian Klipstein made four saves in the losing effort for Bucknell, falling to 4-7 on the year.
After an even first period that saw the teams tied at 3-3, Bucknell outscored the Mount by a 5-1 margin in the second quarter. With the game even at 4-all, the Bison rattled off the final four tallies of the half, including a pair from Collison, to take their largest lead of the contest, 8-4, into the halftime break.
The Mount's offense found its groove early in the third period, connecting twice in the opening minute and a half. Johnson found the back of the net just 17 seconds into the frame, and DiPretoro followed a minute later to cut the Mountaineer deficit in half, 8-6.
Back-to-back goals from Johnson and Lamon midway through the quarter evened the game at 8-8, before Jack Mangan connected off a feed from Austin Short to give the Mount its first lead of the tilt with 4:24 remaining in the third.
Bucknell and the Mount traded goals in the final four-plus minutes as the Mount took a one-goal lead, 10-9, into the final period.
Both teams were held off the board in the opening nine minutes of the fourth before Joe Bethke beat Klipstein to push the Mount advantage to a pair.
Smith scored his third goal of the game with 3:45 showing on the clock to give the Mount a three-goal cushion, 12-9, and despite a tally from O'Hara with 1:19 left, the Mount held off Bucknell in the final minute to earn the 12-10 victory.
The Mount, which improved to 4-6 on the season with the win, topped Bucknell for the third time in the last five meetings between the two programs. With the loss, the Bison fell to 4-7 overall on the year.
Mount St. Mary's heads to Wagner to continue Northeast Conference play on Saturday, April 15 at 1 p.m.
