Emmitsburg, Md. (April 1, 2017) – Bryce Jurk and Joe Saggese combined for 14 points to power Sacred Heart past Mount St. Mary's University, 13-5, on Saturday afternoon at Waldron Family Stadium.
Jurk netted six goals and added a pair of assists, while Saggese registered three goals and three assists as the duo led the Pioneer attack.
Brooks Dutton earned the win in net for SHU with 10 saves, while his counterpart, Matt Vierheller, took the loss for the Mount despite a 15-save performance.
The Pioneers scored the opening three goals of the contest before Mangan got the Mount on the board with a goal at the 4:59 mark of the first quarter. Sacred Heart and the Mount traded goals in the final four-plus minutes of the frame, giving the Pioneers a 4-2 advantage at the end of one.
Johnson scored off a feed from Matt Haggerty for the opening tally of the second, trimming the Mount's deficit to 4-3, but the Pioneers scored the final three goals of the half as Saggese, Max Tuttle and Jurk found the back of the net to make it 7-3 at the break.
Back-to-back goals from Lamon and DiPretoro brought the Mount within a pair of scores, 7-5, at the 4:20 mark of the third period. Jurk notched his third goal of the contest with just 1:19 left in the frame to push the SHU cushion back to three, 8-5, heading into the fourth.
The Mount wasn't able to find the back of the net in the fourth, and Jurk scored three more in the stanza as Sacred Heart walked away with a 13-5 victory.
The win moved SHU to 6-3 overall and 2-1 in NEC play on the year, while the Mount dropped to 3-6 and 1-2 in conference.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action next Saturday (April 8) against Bucknell at 12 p.m.
