Emmitsburg, Md. (February 26, 2017) – The Mount St. Mary's men's lacrosse team dropped a 14-7 decision at the hands of Furman on Sunday afternoon at Waldron Family Stadium.
Lou Yovino led the way for the Paladins with a game-high three goals, while William Holcomb and David Williamson added a pair of goals apiece. Jonah Moore registered four points on a goal and three assists. Hil Blaze went 17-for-25 on faceoffs and also scored his first goal of the season on the team's opening possession.
Bubba Johnson tallied two goals to pace the Mount, and five other Mountaineers scored a goal each, including rookies Keaton Mitchell and Aaron Weisel, who registered the first tallies of their collegiate careers.
The Paladins responded with the next pair of scores, but the Mount answered back as Johnson and Austin Short tallied consecutive goals to once again bring the Mount within a score, 4-3, with just over a minute remaining in the first.
Yovino scored his first of three goals with just 12 seconds showing on the clock, sending Furman into the second with a 5-3 advantage.
The Furman defense stymied the Mountaineers in the second, holding them scoreless while five different Paladins tallied a goal apiece in the period to pad their lead to 10-3 at the halftime break.
Holcomb and Johnson traded goals early in the third frame, before Furman scored the final three goals of the quarter to extend the advantage to 14-4.
After Brenden McCarthy opened the scoring in the fourth, Weisel got on the board at the 9:53 mark for his first career goal. Mitchell followed just over four minutes later with his first career tally, but the Paladins closed out the 14-7 victory to grab their first win of the season, improving to 1-4.
The Mount drops to 0-4 following the loss, and is back in action on March 11 for the first road test of the season at Bellarmine at noon.
