Malik Jefferson Named Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week for the Third Time This Season

March 4, 2019--Mount St. Mary's freshman forward Malik Jefferson (Hopewell, Va.) has been named the Northeast Conference men's basketball Rookie of the Week.  It is the third time this season that Jefferson has won the weekly honor.

Jefferson continued the Mount's remarkable run of NEC Rookie of the Week winners after averaging 18.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.0 blocks and 1.0 steals in a season-ending split. He shot 62.5 percent from the field. Jefferson opened with 16 points and seven boards in Thursday's 65-59 setback to NEC regular season co-champion Fairleigh Dickinson. His dunk with 2:00 remaining gave the Mount a one-point lead before FDU rallied for the win. Two days he contributed 20 points, seven rebounds and a pair of blocks to help spark the Mountaineers to a come-from-behind 73-71 win at St. Francis Brooklyn. His putback with 1:05 left put the Mount ahead by five.

Jefferson is currently second in the NEC in field goal percentage (.592) and is the league's 11th-ranked rebounder (6.1). In total, the Mount took home NEC rookie accolades in 12-of-17 weeks this season, including seven straight to close out the year. Vado Morse won a league-leading six weekly awards, followed by three for Jefferson and one apiece for Chong Qui, Dee Barnes and Nana Opoku. The five honorees on one team and 12 total awards established new NEC records.

Mount St. Mary's finished the 2018-19 season with a 9-22 overall record and a 6-12 mark in the Northeast Conference.
