Emmitsburg, Md. (January 25, 2018)--Junior Robinson, Jonah Antonio and Greg Alexander combined for 64 points to lead Mount St. Mary's past LIU Brooklyn, 86-80, before a lively crowd at Knott Arena on Thursday night. The Mountaineers were 13-of-21 from three-point range in the game.
After LIU Brooklyn scored the first two points of the second half to tie the score at 41-41, the Mount (11-11, 5-4 NEC) rattled off 11 consecutive points to take the lead. Donald Carey started the run with a three-pointer ahead of a Chris Wray lay-up. Antonio added a three-pointer and Robinson capped the run with a traditional three-point play to make it 52-41. The Mount was able to maintain the advantage, stretching the margin to 71-58 on a Robinson lay-up with 7:58 left in the second half. Another Carey three-pointer lifted the Mount to a 77-65 lead before the Blackbirds (9-13, 4-5 NEC) rallied.
LIU Brooklyn went on a 10-0 run that was fueled by seven free throws and a Joel Hernandez three-pointer that cut the Mount's lead to 77-75 with 3:05 left. Robinson was fouled on the next possession, and he sank both shots to put the Mount up by four. After a stop on the defensive end, Carey hit 1-of-2 at the line to make it 80-75 with 1:31 left. LIU's Jamall Robinson converted a three-pointer with 37 seconds on the clock to make it a two-point game, but Robinson hit a pair of free throws with 19 seconds left to restore the Mount's lead to four. LIU's Jashaun Agosto countered with two free throws, but Robinson sealed the win with a pair of charity tosses with eight seconds left.
Robinson, who leads the Northeast Conference in scoring at 21.8 points per game, finished with a game-high 24 points while adding four assists and three rebounds. Antonio added 21 points and four rebounds while going 4-for-8 from three-point range while Alexander matching his career high with 19 points. Alexander finished the contest 6-of-7 from the field and 4-of-5 from beyond the arc. Carey chipped in 13 points and five rebounds while Wray had seven points, nine rebounds and a game-high seven assists.
Hernandez led all scorers in the game with 29 points with Raiquan Clark chipping in 15 points, 12 rebounds and four assists.
Mount St. Mary's shot 53.8 percent overall in the game while converted 13-of-21 (.619) from three-point range. LIU Brooklyn shot 41.4 percent in the contest, including just 8-of-32 (.250) in the second half. The Blackbirds were 23-of-28 at the foul line in the game.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair with 10 lead changes and four ties. The Mount led 15-11 in the first half before the Blackbirds went on a 12-2 run to take a 25-19 advantage. The Mount responded with a 10-to-3 run that included a dunk by the 5-5 Robinson, and three-pointers by Robinson and Alexander, to grab a 31-29 lead. From there, there were a pair of lead changes and three ties in the closing minutes of the half. Antonio closed the half with a tip-in to give the Mount a 41-39 lead at the break.
Mount St. Mary's is back in action on Saturday, January 27, when St. Francis Brooklyn visits Knott Arena for a 4:00 p.m. matchup.
