Baltimore, Md. (December 22, 2017)—Junior Robinson tallied 23 points and eight assists to lead Mount St. Mary's past Coppin State, 66-53, on Friday night. The Mount has won three in a row and improves to 6-7 on the season.
Robinson had five points and three assists during a 12-to-5 run that stretched the lead to 62-41 with 4:17 remaining. Coppin State closed the game with a 12-to-4 run, but it was not enough as the Mount secured the win.
Leading 33-21 at the half, Mount St. Mary's opened the second half with a 12-to-4 run to take a 20-point advantage. Gomes was active early in the half with two baskets, two rebounds, a block and a charge taken over the first four minutes of the second half.
The Mountaineers finished the non-conference slate with a 6-7 record, matching the 1989-90 team for the most non-conference wins by a Mount team since the move to NCAA Division I in 1988-89. The Mount went 6-6 in non-conference play in 1989-90. The win also gives the Mount back-to-back non-conference road wins for the first time since 2012. THe Mountaineers won at American, 59-56, on Monday night.
Robinson was the only Mountaineer in double figures with 23 points, eight assists and five rebounds. He was 8-of-19 from the field in the game. Greg Alexander chipped in nine points while Chris Wray added eight points and a team-high 11 rebounds. Ryan Gomes added eight points and four rebounds for the Mountaineers as well.
Lamar Morgan paced Coppin State (0-13) with 18 points and six rebounds.
The Mount shot 26-of-57 (.456) from the field and was 8-of-22 (.364) from three-point range in the win. Coppin State converted just 17-of-56 (.304) overall and was 9-of-32 ( .281) from three-point range.
Trailing 7-5 early in the first half, the Mount scored nine consecutive points to take the lead. Bobby Planutis started the run with a drive, and Gomes added a lay-up and a dunk before Alexander capped the streak with a three-pointer for a 14-7 advantage.
Coppin State whittled the Mount lead to 17-16, but the Mount was able to close the half on a 16-to-5 run to take a 33-21 advantage. Robinson scored seven points and Alexander had six during the run.
Alexander paced the Mount with nine points in the first half while Robinson added seven points and five assists. Karonn Davis led Coppin with eight first-half points.
The Mount shot 40.0 percent overall in the opening half and was 5-of-15 (.333) from three-point range. The Eagles shot 26.9 percent in the half, and were 5-of-14 (.357) from beyond the arc.
The Mountaineers open Northeast Conference play at Wagner on Friday, December 29, with a 7:00 p.m. matchup.
