Mount St. Mary's Men's Basketball Tops St. Francis Brooklyn, 77-62; Wins Northeast Conference Regular Season Title

Emmitsburg, Md. (February 25, 2017)--Mount St. Mary's used a 24-to-2 second-half run to defeat St. Francis Brooklyn, 77-62, on Saturday afternoon at Knott Arena.  With the victory, the Mountaineers clinched their first Northeast Conference (NEC) regular season title in 21 seasons.

Leading 38-37 with 15:57 remaining, Mount St. Mary's head coach Jamion Christian was assessed a technical foul after arguing a hard foul on the Mount's Elijah Long on a drive to the basket.  St. Francis Brooklyn's Glenn Sanabria then hit 1-of-2 at the line to even the score.

The Mount responded by going on a 24-to-2 run to take control of the game.  Freshman Miles Wilson scored 10 points during the run that was capped by 20 consecutive Mount points.  Junior Robinson added a pair of three-pointers in the scoring spurt that was capped by a Wilson three-point play with 10:34 left in the game.  The Mount led comfortably the rest of the way.

Long led the Mountaineers with 22 points, seven assists and six rebounds while Wilson chipped in 17 points and six rebounds off the bench.  Robinson was the third Mountaineer in double figures with 10 points.  The Mount shot 46.7 percent in the game, including 16-of-32 (.500) in the second half.

Gianni Ford scored 20 of his game-high 23 points in the first half for St. Francis Brooklyn.  The Terriers shot 41.2 percent in the game, but were 8-of-30 (.267) in the second half, including 1-of-12 (.083) from three-point range.

The Mountaineers held an 18-to-11 advantage after a Ryan Gomes lay-up with 10:40 left in the opening half.  The Terriers (4-27, 2-16 NEC) responded with a 17-0 run to take its biggest lead of the game, 28-18, with 5:14 left in the half.  Ford scored 12 of his 23 points over the five-minute span.  The Mount was able to whittle the deficit to 35-33 at the break.

The last time the Mount won the NEC regular season title was in 1995-96, when the team finished with a 16-2 league record.   The Mount's 14 NEC wins this season are the second-most by a Mount team since joining the league in 1989-90.
