Mount St. Mary's Cruises Past Coppin State, 87-49

Emmitsburg, Md. (December 22, 2016)--The offense was clicking on Thursday night as Mount St. Mary's cruised to an 87-49 win over Coppin State at Knott Arena.  The Mountaineers shot 68.1 percent from the floor while hitting 16-of-25 from three-point range in the victory.

It was the second-best shooting night for the Mount since the team moved to NCAA Division I in 1988-89.  The record is 68.6 percent set in a 104-83 win over Norfolk State on January 3, 2014.  The Mountaineers recorded 24 assists on 32 field goals in the game.

The Mount (2-11) went on a 22-to-5 run to take a 30-13 advantage to take control of the contest.  After a Mawdo Sallah free throw broke an 8-8 tie, Will Miller, Junior Robinson and Miles Wilson each connected on three-pointers to make it 18-10.  Miller added two more threes during the run that was capped by an Elijah Long lay-up that gave the Mount a 17-point lead with 6:47 left in the opening half.

Leading 37-19, three different players (Miller, Long and Wilson) nailed three-pointers on consecutive possessions to build the lead to 46-19, and the Mount went to the locker room with a 48-21 advantage.

The Mount shot a sizzling 70.4 percent (19-of-27) from the field in the first half, converting 9-of-13 (69.2 percent) from three-point range.

The second half was pretty much a repeat of the first half as the Mount held its biggest lead of the game, 80-38, after a Bryce Thurston three-pointer with 7:03 remaining.

Miller led the Mount with 16 points, converting 5-of-7 from three-point range in the win.  Robinson added 15 points and five assists with Long chipping in 13 points, five assists and five rebounds.  Wilson went 4-for-4 from the field while hitting all three of his three-point attempts for 11 points while Chris Wray stuffed the stat sheet with 11 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three blocks.

Keith Shivers led Coppin State (1-14) with 10 points and five rebounds.

The Mount finished the game 32-of-47 (.681) from the field and 16-of-25 (.640) from three-point range.  The 16 three-point field goals are tied for the third-most in a single game in Mount history.  Coppin State shot 32.8 percent overall and was 2-of-15 (.133) from beyond the arc.

Mount St. Mary's opens Northeast Conference play on Thursday, December 29, at LIU Brooklyn.  Tip-off is set for 4:30 p.m. at the Steinberg Wellness Center.
