Brooklyn, N.Y. (April 6, 2019) - Strong pitching helps Mount St. Mary's baseball split the double header at LIU Brooklyn on Saturday afternoon at LIU Field. The Blackbirds arms out powered the Mount 5-1 in the first game while two late runs gave the Mountaineers a 5-3 win in the second game.
GAME 1: LIU Brooklyn 5, Mount St. Mary's 1
Four of the Mount's five hits went for extra bases in the 5-1 loss in game one. Patrick Causa tabbed a multi-hit game with a double and a single in the number three slot in the lineup. Thomas Savastio led the Mountaineers offense with a solo homerun for Mount St. Mary's lone run of the game. Myles Nicholson and Zack Costello added the other two hits which both went for two bases. Cole Reeder pitched a shutout inning in relief duties while he only allowed one hit for the Mount.
The Blackbirds (10-17, 3-5 NEC) nabbed the early 2-0 lead after they plated two runs in the bottom of the second before Mount St. Mary's (10-19, 4-4 NEC) pushed their lone run of the game a crossed the board in the top half of the fourth frame. For the LIU Brooklyn in the second, Andrew Smith hit a two run homer that brought Brock Hallum home with him to cross the plate for the first two runs of the game.
Thomas Savastio scored the only run of the game for the Mountaineers after he took a 3-1 fastball over the right field wall for a solo home run in the top of the fourth. This was Savastio's third homer of the season and he is now up to nine runs batted in.
Brock Hallum and Tim Becktold moved the Blackbird lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the fourth to take control of the game. Hallum hit a two RBI double to left center that scored Gregory Vaughn and Alex Briggs on the play while Bechtold brought Hallum home to score later in the inning off of a fielder's choice ground ball.
Alec Huertas (1-2) pitched seven strong frames for LIU while he only allowed one run and struck out eight in the win. Rob Griswald tabbed two hitless innings in relief of Huertas for the Blackbirds. The middle of the LIU lineup did all the damage as the four, five, and six hitters combined for seven of the team's ten hits in the win. Brock Hallum and Andrew Smith recorded two RBI each while Hallum hit a double and Smith hit a home run. Trey McGough (3-3) picked up the loss for Mount St. Mary's after he pitched seven innings but gave up five earned runs.
GAME 2: Mount St. Mary's 5, LIU Brooklyn 3
Myles Nicholson, Zack Costello, and Thomas Bramley led the Mount offense in the second game after each of them recorded multi-hit games. Alex Kriss, Zack Costello, Thomas Savastio, and Ryan Fisher each picked up one run batted in for Mount St. Mary's in the win. Mickael Kuypers, Brenden Kennedy, and Dennis Snyder held the LIU Brooklyn to just three runs off of seven hits. Kuypers started for the Mountaineers and pitched six strong innings in the no decision. Dennis Snyder earned his third save of the year after he shut the Blackbirds down in the ninth frame.
With the game all nodded up at three runs a piece, the Mount and the Blackbirds headed into the last two innings. The Mountaineers scored two runs in the top of the eighth frame to take a 5-3 lead and held LIU Brooklyn scoreless in the last two innings to preserve the win. Zack Costello advanced to third and scored on a fielding error after Thomas Bramley singled to left field. Later in the inning, Ryan Fisher hit a RBI double to left field that brought home CJ Kozorosky. In the bottom of the ninth, Dennis Snyder struck the first LIU batter out swinging and then got the last two batters to ground out to end the game.
Mount St. Mary's took a 3-0 lead heading into the bottom of the third before LIU Brooklyn climbed back into the game with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the third. The Mount started the game hot after Myles Nicholson led off the game by beating out a single to third base. The next batter, Alex Kriss hit a RBI double to left field that brought home Nicholson to score the first run of the game.
In the third inning, Thomas Savastio plated Alex Kriss off of a ground out to the shortstop for the first run scored on the inning for the Mountaineers. In the next at bat, Zack Costello hit a RBI single through the right side of the infield that scored Patrick Causa on the play. For the Blackbirds in the third, Alex Briggs brought LIU back in the game with one swing of the bat after he hit a two run home run to left field that plated Gregory Vaughn.
The Blackbirds evened the ballgame at 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh. LIU loaded the bases with one out to start off the frame with Brock Hallum at the dish, Hallum hit a RBI single to center field that plated Gregory Vaughn on the play for the Blackbird's lone run of the inning. Still threatening later in the inning with the bases loaded again, Mount St. Mary's pitcher Brenden Kennedy tabbed two big strikeouts to end the inning and keep it a 3-3 game.
The two teams will play the series finale tomorrow, April 7 at 1 PM.
