Punta Gorda, Fla. (March 3, 2019) - Seven run eighth inning completed the big Mount comeback win, 19-16, against Villanova on Sunday Night. Five Mountaineers (Myles Nicholson, Alex Kriss, Sean Kelly, Zack Costello, and Ryan Fisher) each finished with multi-hit games in the win. Kriss, Kelly, and Costello combined for eleven runs batted in, eight runs scored, seven hits, three home runs, and two sacrifice flies. Nicholson filled out the stat sheet again going 4-for-6 with two RBI, two runs scored, one stolen base, one double, one put-out, and one outfield assist. Freshman Dennis Snyder (1) pitched nearly two perfect innings picking up five of the six outs by strikeouts to earn his first save of the year.
Mount St. Mary's (3-3) fell behind big early, down 11-4 after two innings of play but cut the deficit to just two runs before Villanova (1-9) plated five more runs in the bottom of the sixth. After six innings, the Wildcats jumped out to a 16-9 lead before the Mount completed the comeback by scoring the game's last 10 runs. Mount St. Mary's plated two runs in the top of the seventh, seven runs in the top of the eighth, and one more run in the top of the ninth. Zack Costello led off the sixth with a home run over the left center field fence while later in the inning, Ryan Fisher was brought home to cross the plate off of a RBI single from Alex Kriss.
In the top half of the eighth inning, Patrick Causa reached base on a dropped fly ball by the right fielder and scored one batter when Thomas Savastio hit a RBI double to left center. A RBI single through the left side off the bat of Sean Kelly plated Savastio for the Mount's second run of the inning. Kelly scored later in the inning off of a RBI single from Ryan Fisher and Fisher crossed home after Alex Kriss singled to left field to tie the game at 16 all. Nicholson gave the Mountaineers the lead after he scored on a passed ball and Kriss added an insurance run after a wild pitch brought him home to cross the plate. The Mount added one more insurance run in the top of the ninth and held on in the bottom of the ninth to secure the win. Costello hit a sacrifice fly to center that scored the pinch runner, Owen Wosleger.
The Mount began the game by scoring in each of the first three innings. The scoring was highlighted by a Patrick Causa two-run homer in the first inning, a three run home run off the bat of Sean Kelly in the third inning, and Zack Costello made it back-to-back home runs in the third inning after he hit his first home run of the game over the left center wall. The Wildcats plated 11 runs in the first two innings of the game. The Villanova scoring was highlighted by a three-run home run from Timothy Lilly in the bottom of the first and a three RBI triple off the bat of Will Reiner in the second. Wyatt Stuckey (1-0) recorded the win for Mount St. Mary's after he pitched a scoreless seventh inning while he allowed no hits. Cameron Mathes (0-1) picked up the loss for Villanova.
The Mount baseball team remains in Florida for their spring break trip with a game against St. Bonaventure Monday, March 4 at 10:30 AM.
