Norwich, CT. (May 25, 2018) - Mount St. Mary's baseball fell to Wagner 3-1 in Northeast Conference (NEC) Tournament elimination game on Friday. Patrick Causa led the Mount offense going 2 for 3 with a single, a homerun, and one RBI. Myles Nicholson and Brendan Dabagian recorded the Mountaineers' other two hits in the loss. Redshirt sophomore Michael Kuypers pitched seven shutout innings in relief while he only allowed three hits and struck out two batters.
The Seahawks nabbed the early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Anthony Godino led off the game with a double down the left field line and was brought home off of a RBI single from Sean Mazzio. Freshman pitcher Brenden Kennedy worked out of a jam to get out of the inning. The Mountaineers evened the game at one run apiece in the bottom of the first off of a solo homerun over the left field wall from Patrick Causa for his sixth of the year.
After a scoreless second frame, Wagner pushed two runs on the board to take a 3-1 lead. Sean Mazzio launched a solo homer to left field to lead off the inning and later in the inning, Phil Capra hit an RBI single that plated Nick Mascelli for the second run of the inning.
Patrick Causa hit a single through the left side of the infield with one out in the bottom of the ninth. Vaughn Parker II followed Causa's at bat by working a walk that put runners on first and second for the Mount but Wagner's Neil Abbatiello recorded the last two outs by way of a pop out and a groundout to end the game and advance the Seahawks to the next round. Abbatiello pitched a complete game while he only gave up one run on four hits and struck out six batters.
Brenden Kennedy (4-4) picked up the loss for Mount St. Mary's and Neil Abbatiello (8-0) earned the win for the Seahawks.
The Mount finished the 2018 season 21-33 with a NEC mark of 15-15.
